Godspeed T25/28 vs Used Garrett Turbo from SR20

I know you shouldn't build a turbo setup around one peice. But I HAD a running turbo setup that used a fleabay T25/T28 that pretty much fucking exploded. My manifold and DP are good quality parts (BEGi Log Manifold and S downpipe). However, I need a new turbo. I can get a used Garrett for ~$250, or new Godspeed turbo for ~$275.

I don't want to hear people talking shit about the godspeed turbo, or what the fuck ever. If you've never owned one...STFU & GTFO.

Guess the real question is, How does the Godspeed stack up against the Garrett. I searched (don't think I haven't) and have only found where people say the Godspeed turbo is good for the price. But has anyone ever started out with a Godspeed turbo then switched to a Garrett or vice versa?

If so,
Spool characteristics/differences between the two?
WG operation, did it hold advertised psi?
Durability, Mileage of Godspeed turbo vs Used Garrett?

Also; I've heard of rebuilding Chinachargers with REAL Garrett parts and it makes them pretty fucking awesome..Any truth to this?

Thanks for your responses in advance,

-Josh

Had a godspeed 3076. loved it. new owner is enjoying it now and its still running like a champ. I don't think there are many here that have t25 godspeeds. Most have the 28/30. The results are really inconsistent, so I doubt you'll get ONE overwhelming answer here. Some have made REALLY good power, and some not so much.

Car never made boost again, I couldn't find a fitting for the turbo oil inlet. Car went back N/A and all turbo parts sit in a corner.

and the car sits like this now;

Does the 28/30 use the same DP bolt pattern and flange as the 25/28?

The car mainly gets used for AutoX and driving to work once or twice a month. Because of the AutoX side of life the car enjoys I need something that spools pretty fast to ~8-10psi. Does the 28/30 spool fast enough that I wont be left holding my dick on corner exits praying for boost?

How much power are you looking for? At 9psi from a sr20 2554 I made right under 200hp and 200ft/lbs of torque. It was almost a perfect an Autox setup. I would personally go with a genuine garrett if you are using the car for Autox.

But is a USED Garrett better than a NEW Godspeed turbo?

I'm just scared to buy used shit I guess.

shuiend 06-03-2011 01:35 PM

I bought my sr20 2554 off a guy for $100 and put something like 20k on it, then sold it to another user on here. He has since sold it again and I think it is still in use. Just make sure the real garrett has no shaft play and you should be fine.

trakhoar 06-03-2011 01:36 PM

I thought the OE turbo was a 2560R?

Thanks, will do. They are the same price, so i guess I'll go with the real McCoy.

Yes, I would have to say it is better. I've driven a chinacharged car and it was not "Zomg! Uber slow spoool!" but the transition into boost was noticeably different. It was a T25 equivalent of my gt2554. I think it's more of a quality control issue than anything. Some are great, some are meh.

Don't be scared of used parts. Every part you put on your car instantly becomes a used item. I traded parts to get my used gt2554 and it's fine. Just know what you're looking for if you inspect it before you buy it.

EDIT: The SR20 T25 is also known as the T25G and it's a great turbo. I used to run one, before I ended up with the gt2554. They can be rebuilt for dirt fucking cheap (if ever needed)

I agree: if you're going to beat on the car constantly (autox) I'd definitely go with a good condition authentic garrett or something else that's brand name.
And there's nothing wrong with a used turbo as long as its in good shape.

the godspeeds use a weird 5 bolt turbine outlet that's ALMOST like a regular t25 5 bolt but just a bit off, so you have to make your own dp or have a godspeed specific flange welded to it. At least that was the case with my 3076.

It was perfect for my driving style and I loved it, but I'd say a 30 would be quite a bit laggy for auto-x use.

Get a brand name 2560 or equivelant. I think it would be the perfect turbo for your goals.

Journal vs BB will also effect spool.

Weaver 06-03-2011 01:54 PM

BB = $$$$$$$, and I only have $$$

Weaver 06-03-2011 01:55 PM

Found some T25Gs on Ebay, price range from 191 - 300, used. says they're in "good shape, with little or no shaft play and turbine spins freely" https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/images/smilies/gay.gif

18psi 06-03-2011 02:01 PM

On small turbos like the t25's the bb vs jb spool difference really isn't that drastic IMHO.

Weaver 06-03-2011 02:19 PM

thats good to know, because i'm going with the JB to save meh greenbacks.

Vlad, what ecu/injectors/other mods are you running?
build page?

18psi 06-03-2011 02:22 PM

diypnp, 1000cc, bunch of other stuff
Not running anymore tho, car is sold
my build thread is in the builds section.

Weaver 06-03-2011 02:28 PM

If you don't mind me asking why did you sell it?

18psi 06-03-2011 02:33 PM

Sometime in the near (hopefully) future Im going to start on another one just like it but with more cylinders under the hood. No replacement for displacement.;)
