Good Turbo vs Bad Turbo (turbo pr0n)

Ever wondered what a good vs bad turbo looks/performs like?

Well a gt28rs at 10.x psi did this on my 1.6l with a damaged wheel.

As you can see... still made power... but laggy :(.
This is the turbine wheel (foreign object damage from previous owner)

That is no good... I was "lucky" it wasn't super unbalanced... destroying itself and other things over usage.

This is what it should look like (just got the replacement)
Gotta love Garrett OEM boxing.

Packed with foamy love...

I'll be doing another comparison dyno with the new turbo soon. I have some broken manifold bolts and turbine housing bolts that need machine shop attention first though.

Stay tuned for the comparison though.

It is like porn, nice closeups on her internals.. ;)

Really though, this gave me wood.. cant wait to see the new dyno sheet.

Will be extremely interesting to see the difference. Will you be running it in the same tune and no other part changes? 236 at 11psi is pretty impressive considering the damaged turbine.

I'll be running the same ignition map and target AFRs... but I'll have to retune parts of the fuel map as we are all fairly sure i'll be seeing quite a change in spool up.

Delay on results. I couldn't get the broken stud out of the manifold, so I gave up... took it off the car and will be giving it to the EDM guy to remove the stud Monday.

edm ftw.... that sucker must have been in there good.

Splitime 09-07-2008 09:18 AM

Yah... i could move it a 1/4 turn... no more. I killed teeth on visegrips. Then on a new set of them... shearing metal off at most. Then I got an actual stud removal tool... sheared more metal off stud. Then I cut it... notched it and used an impact screwdriver.... barely a budge there before it shattered the impact screwdriver bit...

EDM ftw is so true.

I know it sounds scary, but when that happens to me, I heat the bolt up with a blow torch. That puppy comes out then.

Car is back together minus oil/coolant and oil temp gauge wiring. I should have it out on the road tomorrow.

Exact dyno day is up in the air, just have to go with buddy some night.

Drag strip visit on the 21st it looks like.
