Hey so i started putting my own turbo kit to gather. this is going to be my 1st time turboing a car.

I got the turbo factory t25 out of my eagle talon and the same with the IC

I don't know much about turbos so I apologize in advance for sounding really ignorant.

I got the turbo out and was checking it out and notice that the shaft will slide in and out just a touch. should the shaft for the turbines no move at all in any direction?

would it be worth rebuilding the turbo and using it on my miata or do you guys think in would be better to shop around and get a new turbo.



My goal for the miata to to get around 150hp. Not really looking for anything wild, just a little quicker.

any in put would be very helpful

financially it would be about the same to get a sr20 t25 (which is a little bigger from what I hear) than to rebuild that dinky tiny dsm t25.

As for the rest of the questions: 150whp is very easy to reach. EVERY SINGLE question you would have can easily be answered by reading the diy faq and using search function.

1mm should be max for shaft movement, any more IMO would be considered too much.

I started out with a rebuilt tsi turbo and smic and front mounted the ic. I picked up a vortec fmu from a s/c mustang with a 12:1 diaphram and ran 1.8 injectors, ebay manifold and downpipe, and home made oil and water lines. It ran awesome once all the little kinks were worked out, and I was at 10lbs with my stock block, 190k miles, stock fuel pump, and my own fabbed exhaust. If you're confident that you have the money to fix things WHEN they go wrong (not if), then IMO go ahead and slap the rebuilt turbo and intercooler on and get everything else off ebay. I know this is the opposite of what everyone else says, and I got flamed for it when I posted what I was doing. However, it's a great place to start from, it can be done for less than 500 bucks (I did), it's pretty safe if you're not running more than 7psi, and it sure is a good kick in the pants.

PS- I ran the crap out of that setup with a stock block, tranny, motor mounts, ignition, and clutch for about 5k miles, then upgraded everything. When you go to upgrade, do it in this order: 1) clutch 2) EM and EGT gauge 3) rear end/tires (5 lug conversion if possible) 4) then start upgrading turbo components (don't forget injectors and eventually fuel pump).

Remember- don't let anyone tell you that ghetto modifying is stupid. If done correctly, you can get the same results as one who spends 3k, you just get it progressively and in the end cheaper.

Yeah its doable but the bigest hurdle is the megan racing manifolds most of us who run dsm turbos run. They are cheap, and prone to cracking but for the price point you can get **** done cheaply and effectly. Browse around here some more and pm some people who have done things similiar to what you want to acheive for the finer points. Turboing is so simple though man just takes abit of thought.

nice thing about the dsm t25 or 14b which is actually a bit bigger is they are really easy to come by, craigslist, dsmtunners, chitowndsm, and dsm talk to just name a few, they are cheap, pretty good turbos and like i mentioned easy to come by.

How much power can you get from a dsm T25 on a 1.6? Also what other turbo's can be swapped for the t25 while still using the same manifold & DP? Thanks.

lol most all dsm turbos swap so from the 14b to the 16g its all doable. and then some dont ask newb questions like that without trying to do some reaserch first newb :P

I'm making at least 140whp with my 14b running 10psi stock injectors small fmic with voodoo management. It didn't cost that much but it did involve lots of fab work. I know it's a bandaid job with low numbers but at lease it's not NA.

If your doing it on the cheep run it unless in contacts the housing, or leaks really bad.

FYI peeps small 16g on ebay **** manis made 200whp at 8 psi on my 1.6, with stock ecu injectors, 12-1 rrfpr, and, WI + stock timming.
