Greddy td04 spool time

1 Attachment(s)
Since i cant find much in the spool thread thought id ask here. Turbo is the greddy td04 with kraken manifold and 2.5inch downpipe and single resonator, no cat or muffler.

After blowing up the stock 1800 with wrx td04 in my nb1 a couple months ago ive finally got the new replacement 1600 running and tuning it, which came with the above turbo setup. Ive got it holding 14/15psi to redline which is nice but it seems to spool pretty bad, worse than id expect for the turbo size, even for a 1600 vs 1800.

Does this look right? or do i have to play with when it holds the wastegate closed a bit, im not really sure how that works besides guess and check. Since my open loop control is pretty solid im guessing i can use those values to start on tuning closed loop? will that help the low down at all?

Or is this just all normal 1600 stuff?

attached msl file.

Am I reading this right? U replaced a 1.8L with a 1.6??

1.6 is hurting spool and turbo is likely not as efficient in spooling.

Closed loop will maybe give you 100-200rpm sooner spool. MAYBE

Yes, I bought a built 1600, turbo, manifold, act clutch and fly, 550cc injectors, m-tuned fuel rail for same price it was going to cost me to buy a 1800 shortblock, aftermarket rods and pistons and get it machined to fit. And selling my old turbo/manifold/injectors and not having to replace my worn clutch and fly makes it a good option for my budget, as ive just replaced the 6 speed after blowing that up as well. And wway easier to find replacement parts in NZ as 1800s are less common, which is important for a somewhat race car.

I know it wont be as good as the 1800, but im just wanting to see if im maximizing what I do have. And not blowing up another gearbox.

At 217tq you shouldn't be really blowing up 6 speed boxes.

Might be just bad luck with the last gear box.

It's a virtual Dyno plot so who knows how accurate the actual numbers are, was not heat to compare curves. It might be closer to 230 which smashing gears in a race track could quite easily cause issues .

Something is up somewhere. Even your 1.8 wasn't.spooling that well. This is my 1.6 with a Kraken and a Subaru TD04L-13T with a 2.5" downpipe to an ebay OBX 2" cat back using a 2" test pipe with no transition.

My friend's 1.6 with greddy kit has 14psi by 3.2k when it isn't leaking. He has an Artec greddy replacement manifold and full 3" turbo back with only a resonator.

Maybe my timing map is a bit conservative?

x_25 03-04-2019 09:40 AM

Maybe? This is what I am running.

My 1.8 with TD04-13T spools a touch faster than's X-25's. Very similar. IIRC, can see 15 psi at 3000 - 3300.

The 15g greddy supplies it's laggy. It's nothing like the 13t from a WRX. It has a larger exhaust housing. I ran a greddy 15g many years ago. 15psi I made 227hp/217 tq on a dynojet. I would hit full boost in 4th gear around 3800-4100 depending on how the weather was. So honestly you aren't going to get it to spool much better. If you put in a 13t from a WRX you'll see a 500rpm spool improvement.

Sweet, if thats what i can expect out of the turbo then thats cool, just making sure i wasn't doing something wrong. As laggy as the graph looks, you don't notice it at all once you're up in the revs its fine.

Any idea if I can push it past 15psi or is it getting out of its efficiency?

andyfloyd 03-07-2019 10:28 PM

You can run it up to about 18psi before it's pretty much tapped out. It flows 428cfm it should be good for 250-265whp at Max.

Sweet, just seeing what headroom ive got in time attack if i need to pull a couple tenths out of the hat for a placing.

andyfloyd 03-07-2019 11:14 PM

It's a pretty decent turbo besides the lag. Like you said though once you are over 4k it's pretty instant. I really loved my greddy setup back in the day the way that turbo spools makes the car feel faster than it is because it hits a little late but ramps up really quick once it gets going.

Seems about right for a 1.6

This is my 1.8 with a full 2.5" catted exhaust, more boost but softer timing in the mid range. I str

Little bit of colder weather on the weekend caused boost spiking to 18psi @ 4000rpm which is a bit better haha.
