GRM Challenge Miata - Dyno Results

After taking 3/47 or so at the challenge, I decided to finally dyno the car. I'm quite happy with the numbers, really. 187RWHP and 168.2 ft/lb. Not bad for a car that is at a current build cost of a mere $1975 (including the cost of the car) with about an hour's worth of street tuning. Did I mention that she's super fun to drive? There is definately a lot of room for improvement, though. There is still a lot of needed tuning and the turbocharger is quite undersized. However, the low end torque curve is pretty bitchin'.

Not bad at all dude i am impressed. Sadly as i found out when looking at the Dec issue of GRM last night, everyone else will have to wait for the january issue to see the results in print.

what are the details of the build?

The paint is left over aircraft paint that was headed for the garbage. A friend works for PPG Aerospace. The gray is left over from one of BMW's corporate jets.

The turbo is an IHI VJ14 hotside and cartridge with T-Bird VC30 compressor. It spools fairly quick and is currently boosting to 15PSI, but it doesn't have a large flow volume.

A few additional details are as follows:
*SSAutochrome Knock-off GReddy Turbo Manifold
*Homebrew Manifold to Turbo Adaptor Plate
*Modified Volvo 740 Intercooler
*Homebrew Intercooler Piping
*Volvo 740 Radiator and Overflow Tank
*1987 Mazda 626 Thermostat Housing
*Mercury Capri XR2 Injectors
*Homebrew Downpipe with Divorced Waste Gate
*Megasquirt I w/ V3.0 board - full standalone.

That car looks great. It's amazing what can be done for such little money.

Imron? That's good stuff, very durable. My dad's boat was painted with white Imron. Looked GREAT.

Imron is also very toxic stuff, tough as nails though.

Some stiff competition this year. Congrats on doing so well.

I've wanted to build a 'sucker' car for this competition for years but looks like someone beat me to the punch.

Still can't believe someone built a sucker twin turbo corvette for 2k.

Zabac 10-22-2007 03:12 PM

how does one build a twin turbo set up for less than 2K, and then the cost of a corvette...no effin way...they should regulate it somehow, someonoe donate me a porsche and a shit load of goodies and ill spend 2K on it and win...wtf, not fair id say, but hey thats racing

cjernigan 10-22-2007 03:35 PM

Part of the rules allow selling parts off the car equal to the amount paid for the car. Buy a $2k corvette, sell enough parts off it to equal $2k and you have a whole new budget to spend. Not saying it's easy, i'm sure it's tough but they can recoupe costs that way in order to sink more cash into the vehicles.

magnamx-5 10-22-2007 03:38 PM

the 300zx they had on there a few years ago did the same thing.

Zabac 10-22-2007 03:43 PM

still, it just doesnt seem right
