GT2554 or what?

Got a used BEGi S kit but it has a nasty Churbo that I'm reluctant to even turn the key with. So, I'm thinking of replacing it with a Garrett 2554r but would welcome any suggestions for other brands that represent bolt on compatibility but either offer faster spool or better value for $ than the Garrett brand.

I'm buying brand new and after faster spool not bigger boost, so anything that can reach 12psi is fine.

The kits are built to garrett flanges, so you'll be hard pressed to find another "brand" that fits. In fact I can say with 95% confidence that nothing else will fit beyond china chargers or Garrett products.

Remember boost is relative. If you want faster spool you should try a small(er) turbo, where 12psi is roughly 200-220hp on your 1.6. A GT3XXX will get to 12psi (eventually), and you'll be closer to 250+.

The 2554r is perfect for you, it's what I have, used off a SR20, rebuilt myself. Spools at 2500rpm and will run a perfect 200hp at 10ish psi with the right exhaust/tune setup. I love it.

That being said, if you are indeed buying new, I'd probably spring for the 2560 range. Near as makes no difference spool as the SR20 turbo, with much more head room to go above and beyond 200hp should the boost bug ever hit you.

An S13 T25 is basically a non ball bearing 2554, for all intents and purposes, can be purchased in great condition off ebay for a couple hundred dollars.

As stated, your options are pretty much a used SR20 Garrett or a new 2554r. You can get a used SR20 for dirt cheap and rebuild it fairly easily, or get a recently rebuilt one for a tad bit more than dirt cheap. Or you can fork out a few hundred more for a ball bearing Garrett and have a slightly better turbo that will spool faster. There are no other turbos besides the china/ebay turbos that are flanged the same though.

Don't fear the churbo!

Cool. Me thinks I'll look into the GT2560R and as a fall back, the GT2554R.

Thanks chaps....!

What do most think of the Kinugawa brand turbos? I think they are Japanesse made and seem to be about 33% less than Garrett.... Any good?

Gslender,

We're going down the same path again though I'm probably a few steps behind because I'm upgrading to a BP at the same time.

I have a Flyin Miata manifold and downpipe and I bought a used S15 turbo. I haven't found a definitive answer as to whether it's a 2554 or 2560 equivalent.

AFAIK it's not the same as a S13 turbo.

I don't see an issue using a 2nd hand turbo as long as it's in good condition and I'd trust a Garrett.

The s15 turbo is the same as a gt2560.

Yup - got the BEGi manifold and downpipe... just not sure if I should trust the Churbo or not... Mmmm might just at least turn it over and see how it all goes but do expect to dump it in favour for a good tasty Garrett.

Have you got a 3/8 NPT tap and drill ??
