GT2554RLS Turbo?
So in my quest to research everything I need to know about turboing my miata, I ran across an OEM turbo being sold from a MazdaSpeed Protege (2003) listed as a "T25G". While I feel I have a decent comprehension of a turbo system at this point, I'm still trying to fully understand all the differences between individual turbos out there and the effects those differences all have. After researching this specific turbo, It appears the actual model # is a GT2554RLS.
https://www.mazdas247.com/forum/show...SP-stock-turbo. Link has more relevant info in post #40 like compressor maps, diameters, trims, A/R's... I'm not sure what the "LS" designation is, but does anyone know if it is differentiable from the popular GT2554R? If not, I may have found a really good deal with it being sold for $200 and no shaft play. Let me know if I'm missing something obvious here. I'm still trying to make sense of this barrage of turbo-related information I've been reading through for the last few weeks :noob: |
You got some pictures? Who knows what flanges are on this thing.

This is the turbo OP is interested in. It looks like a journal bearing t25 from a 240sx.
It's definitely not a ball bearing gt2554r https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3ca1208ddb.jpg |
The OEM Mazdaspeed Protege turbo is a GT2554R. If it is infact off a MSP it is Ball bearing.

Yes that sadly is the only photo i have my hands on as of right now. PM'd the seller for more. I assumed the turbo was OEM but after reading again, the seller doesn't necessarily say where it's from, so Its possible it's not a GT25R. What about the turbo points to a standard journal bearing T25?
Just for the sake of my curiosity, however, if we assume it is the OEM MSP Protege turbo (GT2554RLS), It would be a similar design to the GT2554R and a great deal? |
Well I did some additional research and yossi said it. Not the OEM MSP Protege turbo. Probably just an s13 T25G as the listing stated. I just assumed that the OEM turbo might be considered a T25G for some reason (who came up with all these turbo names anyways?). Still would be interesting to hear if anyone is running that OEM turbo with success though since it sounds promising.

A very popular turbo to put on a miata.
Very responsive, fast spooling but lacks in top end power. Check my build thread and do a search on it, there's plenty of information. |
From all I found earlier, I've heard the same thing about T25's. Figured I could live with the top end and upgrade down the road to a T2560 or such. It's been difficult finding clear information, but from my understanding, the T25G has a larger exhaust housing than the standard T25, allowing for a slightly better top end at the cost of a little lag. Some people are sure the T25G is BB as well but I'm not too confident in that. Regardless, i think im going to bite on this one and pick it up for ~$200.
