Gt2860 is this to big
after a lot of reading im starting to put togther in my head what my turbo build will consist of.
a friend is selling a Chinese Gt2860 is this to big for a 1.8mx5 im not looking for pushing my enigne to its limits just to make around 180 bhp cheers guys |
If you want a cheap small turbo, I would look into getting a SR20 T25 turbo. I'm sure the china turbo will make the power, but your low end will most likely suck. T25 has been proven time and time again.
|
why would you limit yourself to such low output?
for that sort of power, I'd go even smaller than the SR20 T25 (since it doesn't spool ultra fast). |
I have a china 2870 with a 99 head, 3" exhaust, and a low mount tubular manifold it's still spools slow. I'm currently looking for something better.
I'd say go with a t25 |
a 60mm wheel will spool much better than a 70mm wheel, all other things being constant.

Didn't you have a china similar to that size? |
60mm compressor, larger turbine, and it spooled great on a 1.6L.
|
180bhp?
lol get the smallest turbo you can find |
Find something with like a 56mm compressor, and a .48 A/R turbine. Fast spool, perfect for your needs.
|
what car does have
|
turbo size vs usable power band.
size is subjective |
A Chinese 2860 will spool fine. My chin 2870 spools fine. 9psi was 204whp on mine with a log mani and 3in exhaust so 8 or 9psi should get your 180whp out of a 60mm given a similar hotside.

I've been looking on and off for the 'Braineak Special' T3 50-trim churbo without success. Brain's was IWG, right? All I can find on fleabay is EWG 50-trim churbos.
|
gospeed sells it, but it's much cheaper from some sources on ebay...it's much more expensive that it was when i got it for around $175 shipped.
Godspeed T3 Internal Wastegate 48AR 8PSI Exhaust V Band Turbo Charger 350 HP | eBay |
I'm also wondering why the 180hp limit? Fueling? The stock 1.8 engine is good for ~250 without a problem and while a 2860 isn't the turbo I would choose to make that number, it would do it. If you're dead set on 180, I'm with the other guys. Find the smallest turbo you can lay hands on. Come to think of it that's dead on stock power for a mazdaspeed miata. You could look at a part out from someone who has gone for bigger power and hit your goals.
|
Dammit I was searching for 'IWG' instead of 'internal wastegate'.
OP the link that Brain gave or his earlier suggestion of an SR20 T25 is what you want, not a 2860 churbo. Which I've never heard of so I assume it's the 2871 churbo that is pretty reliable but slow spooling. |
A real BB 2860rs should spool pretty nicely, i've got one in the garage and will be finding out soon enough.
However, the china ones are pretty laggy, because journal bearing, less efficient, etc. I'd stick with the sr20 t25 for your power goals (that's what I'm currently running). Seems to put down near 200whp at around ~10-12psi. |
I only say 180 cos I'm not looking to push to the limit but if 250 is fine then I'll go more but 220 is around what I'd be happy with.

I have been tempted to give this turbo a try
Nissan Skyline GTR BNR R32/R33/R34 S13 S14 Turbo T28 GT2860 SR20 KA24 SR26 25 20 seems similar to a 2560 |
The 2860 isn't too big per se, but will be somewhat laggy and is larger than you need for your power goals. However, if your friend is giving it away you can throw it on there and save $$.
Just depends on what your goals are and what your budget is. If you want quick spool and can spend the money, the 2560 is the perfect turbo for a stock-rods 1.8. |

I was told at one point to avoid anything with a "Skyline" housing because the 5 bolt exhaust flanges are different from the "standard" Garrett 5 bolt? Something to keep in mind anyway.
There is always the *ISIS T25/T28 Replacement Turbo - Nissan SR20DET - Enjuku Racing Parts, LLC :dunno: I've looked at ISIS. I would have to redo my IC piping and intake. Not to mention I would also have to purchase the inlet and outlet flanges. I'll call speedyracer and ask about the flange. |

Should have waited and made it a 10 year necro revival ....

Since this is bumped anyways, I went ahead and used my gt2860 (gen1 ball bearing) on a kraken setup with a bp4w. Not at all disappointed. For the street a 2560 might be a better choice, but I still hit 16psi by 3800 in 4th gear. Not bad, and I'm at 7k elevation. Made 308whp on "allofit" so don''t expect much more than a 2560 power wise, but I can only assume it runs cooler than said 2560. The car is mostly a track car at this point and no heat issues.
|
If anyone is still interested,
I see 15psi by 3400rpm in 4th gear (6speed, 3.6, 1.8 no vvt) with a GTX2860R gen2 0.6 rear housing. Great turbo, mine is a pure street car |
