Help me choose what turbo

I'm shooting for 250whp. I'm trying to decide what turbo to go with as well as injectors... heres my setup so far

HKS manifold
EMB
walbro 230 pump
3" DP+full straight exhaust

I've also been thinking about the GT3071R

adbradley 01-17-2007 10:09 AM

Are you planning on spending a lot on you r turbo, or want to save money on it? Do you have the HKS already? if not go with the megan racing manifold and DP on e-bay cheap price, then source a used 16g mitsubishi turbo and ave it rebuilt.. And then talk to magnaMX-5 he can point you the right direction... Why not considder a megasquirt rather than the EMB? Its pretty simple now a days, for about 550, you can have a ready to go setup thats going to control your spark and fuel..

Al Hounos 01-17-2007 10:29 AM

EMB aint gonna cut it. you need somethin to run 550cc injectors. the HKS is a good mani, the megan racing one is a pos. If you get a GT3071R, pick up another for me. :D IT's good for BIG power, the GT2560R could get you to 250.

Hard4Hardtops 01-17-2007 12:02 PM

Ya I've already got these parts, I'm starting to think twice about this EMB....

beerslurpy 01-17-2007 12:57 PM

I thought the HKS mani used mitsu turbos, no?

How much are these MS i havn't done much research on them.. but they sound interesting.. is it a stand alone?

cjernigan 01-17-2007 03:56 PM

yes its a standalone that you buy prebuilt or build it yourself. google megasquirt and visit the MS forum on here as well as msefi.com for more info.
More reading than you can handle in one day guaranteed.

The reading is worth is.. Its a stand alone unit, but there is a guy on this forum that is selling a kit where all you do is plug it into your ecu and it takes control of fuel, and ignition.. and its totally programable.. and adaptable to do what ever you want...

The GT25 gets you 250 AND fast spooling. I wish I would have gotten the GT25 instead of the GT28. Find some 550cc S5 (1989 to 1991) RX-7 Turbo injectors. I bought mine new on ebay for $145.

Funny you should say that. I bought a gt25 and wish I bought the gt28. I haven't really tested my gt25 at 12psi yet, but I'm beginning to wonder if this turbo is right for my new power goal. Are you interested in a possible trade?

Al Hounos 01-18-2007 01:22 PM

Stripes, if we were closer, I'd trade you as a test in a second. We're kinda mixed up, you know, me with the small engine and bigger turbo, you vice versa. I'd like to try a 2554 and a 3071, I feel like I went too middle of the road.

But to rotary: a 2554 would have a tough time getting to 250, no?

Stripes 01-18-2007 01:27 PM

Yeah, curiosity is getting the best of me. I wish I had someone close as well to swap turbos for a day. I might just buy a new gt28r and compare the two first hand.

I was under the assumption that this was reasonable, with proper fuel management. Maybe not. I thought I had seen someone do it, but my memory ain't so good.

I'd swap if I hadn't just put the dang thing in and I've only driven it less than 200 miles. I will know better once I am able to tune with the ms. :)

I really am going for serious low end power.

tylerdurden 01-18-2007 02:42 PM

I've seen a little over 240whp with a 2554R at 10psi on a 2000 tuned by Shiv. And it was blown up eventually, don't know what killed it though. I'd say 220whp is more realistic for a stock internalled M1 1.8 not tuned with a standalone or by Jesus.
