Help me get started
I am getting serious on boosting my 1.6. I'm wondering if I just wanted to do a mild 140-150whp daily driver setup, what would the best bang for the buck route to go?
Some side questions. 1. For 150 would I have to get a stand alone ecu, or could I just get a Adjustable FPR and fuel pump with some rx8 injectors? 2. Would you guys recommend getting a kit, or parting it together. 3. Should I reach beyond for more than 150whp even though I'm on a budget and want reliability. Or will the car become more of a money pit to go for 200? So far my parts list I can think of is -Wideband sensor -MSPNP2 (or not?) -RX8 Injectors -Fuel pump -Turbo kit? (or possibly put one together) That's where I need your help, what kits are decent for a realitivly cheap price? Or should I part one together, if so what things will I need? I've searched the forums and google, and can't find anyone looking for lower power goals, seems everyone wants 200 and get's told to have 3-4k sitting around to make it reliable. I don't believe this as I had a friend that turbo'd his miata (although his was the 1.8) and was in it about 1800$ including the ecu, and he made just over 200whp. He used the CXRacing kit. Is that any good? Because if so I might be able to do the same. I'm a noob though, so please treat me like one and tell me what I need. I plan on getting the ecu, wideband, and injectors first, then after a few months buying boost shit (unless it's not needed for 150). That way I can get a hand on tuning and attempt not to blow it up the first day. |
Start by not building a turbo setup around a mythical horsepower number.
Next trash the 1.6 and get a 1.8. Then a kit, FM barebones kit, MK turbo kit. Any number of the bare bones kits. (manifold, turbo, downpipe, charge pipes, IC, oil and cooling solution are just a few items) Stage1 clutch. Exhaust. Injectors. 500+cc Wideband. Megasquirt. Coolant reroute is also a good thing to do too. I can't believe anyone can even DIY a turbo kit for $1800. Unless you're buying only used ebay garbage. |

Would you guys recommend just going wideband, MSPNP, and injectors to start, then go turbo? I feel if I go all at once shit will go wrong.
What type of tuning is done on a N/A miata with megasquirt? |
Absolutely. You'll save many headaches by getting a hang of tuning first.
The same tuning that's done on a turbo Miata? Fuel, spark, AE, idle, and all corrections, etc.. |
I guess I'll need a laptop along with that, any ups or downs with different OS's. Do you use win7/8/10? I'm sure it says on their site, but I'd like to know what people that have been there and done it have to say.

I use win8.
I also bought one of those touch screen tablet / laptop Lenovo units. Fantastic for road tuning. |
I have XP. It works.. slowly, but it works.
