help with stock afm box

So I am struggling to put my giant stock 1.6L afm in my car coming off of the turbo. I see pictures where people take off the black box with the air filter and just have that top silver part with a filter at the other end. Thats what I want to do but do I need a blanking plate or something when I take it off or what do I need to get. I got the square adapter to inlet thing for the back of it for my cone filter but is there anything else I need and FYI i only see the car on weekends so I can't just try it myself now. Thank you

Expect to catch flak for keeping the stock AFM.

That said, back when we were still using them, we all dealt with them differently.

This is the best way to deal with the AFM, as shown in a photo taken of my first Miata about 9 or 10 years ago.

It's difficult to see the AFM in this image, as it's resting in a trash can about 10 feet from the car.

I see all of the photos that they take the black box with the air filter off and I was wondering if there is anything I need to buy to cover up anything when I take off the black air box like a cover or something I'm not really sure how it works so If anyone knows that would be great.

Google. 1.6 Miata cone filter.

There are only two openings in the AFM. The inlet and the outlet. Nothing else to block off. Although the square to filter apater on my friend's had openings that weren't blocked off, so check for that.

The AFM is possibly the biggest restriction in the stock intake system though. Keeping it really is not ideal and you should get some sort of ECU to ditch it unless there is a very, very good reason not to. You will end up spending more in the long run on bandaids to make everything work with the stock ECU than you will just getting a PNP megasquirt.

man, you really need to do some research before asking such basic questions. makes me scared to think you own and operate a turbo miata.

While searching for the pictures I posted above, I came across a thread in which a guy was asking for help dealing with some gremlins on a car he'd recently purchased.

I immediately recognized the under-hood shots. They were of my old '92.

Apparently, the guy I sold it to proceeded to royally fuck it up, and then re-sold it to another poor bastard who couldn't figure any of it out.

It made me sad.

I did not apply the "JDM" sticker under the hood, nor did I cut the valve cover and paint the cam gears purple.

When I sold the car, it had a functioning windshield-washer bottle, which was also the primary reservoir for the now-gone water injection system. (It was refilled automatically from a larger tank in the trunk.)

When I sold the car, it had COPs. And proper ducting. And a heat shield over the turbo, which was made of two layers of steel with a layer of fiberglass heat-wrap material in between, all riveted together. And there weren't mystery wires dangling near the steering pump. And the vacuum line coming off the up-pipe (which feeds the MBC) was properly supported. And I have no idea what that white tie-wrap just behind the drivers side headlight lid is doing. And the side-mirrors weren't painted flat black. And I'd just installed a brand new dipstick with a non-broken handle.

This is kind of what I imagine the OP is dealing with right now.
