How big is too big??

2 Saturday's ago I drove my Miata to work for the first time since winter.
BORING.
I never realized how bored I was with this car until that day. I have a pile of parts laying around, and I have door bars.
I decided that since I hardly drive the thing anyway, it's time to build my spare motor/ install the door bars/ put a big turbo on it.
Don't give me crap for keeping the stock 4.30 rear and 5 speed, cause I won't hear it.
Turbo selection??? Still debating.
I bought a brand new Tial 38mm MVS v-band external wastegate last week, and I debated drilling out my FM cast manifold and fabbing a custom bolt on V band flange to mount the EWG to. I don't think I'm gonna do that. I think I'm gonna get an AR Tech Manifold. What footprint though? T3 or T25??
I found a turbo for sale local to me...it was a Godspeed A/R .70...dude said it was a GT35. It had a twin scroll flange, blah blah blah...all I can say is, "there is no f'n way I would ever put something that big on my car." This turbo was ungodly huge. I would need to ditch power steering AND Faeflora my frame rail just to get the hood to close.
The turbo size made me think though...it had a 2.5" compressor outlet, and a 4"compressor inlet. If I'm not mistaken, that's the same size as the godspeed 2876 and 3076 compressor flanges? How big are the 2876 and 3076 as compared to my SR20 turbo? I laid my SR20 turbo next to this thing...I should've taken a picture, cause this "GT35" was enormous. In fact, I think it was this exact turbo:
GT35 Turbo Charger .63AR
I'm looking for something more like this:
GT3076R T28 Internal Wastegate Turbo Charger
or this:
GT2876R T28 Turbo Charger ( No Wastegate)
How different are those turbos in physical size?
Anybody have a recommendation for me?
My goal is to max out my RX8 425cc injectors by 10psi. I'm guessing this should be about 260whp?? (correct me if I'm wrong)
Thanks.

So you want it to drive like shit and come on boost super hard for the last 300rpm forcing you to drive the guts off its to not die so its less boring?

Can't you max out your injectors, and hit over 260hp with that SR20 turbo? You'll have a better powerband, and more drivablity.

Turn the boost up.

his compressor does not the flow capacity to hit 260rwhp.

I cant take this thread serious because of the potential turbo choices.

so therefore, too big:

Lol. So you're saying a 2560/ 2860/ 2871 is more suitable for my needs?

thirdgen 04-09-2013 08:42 AM

Thing is, I don't want to make 260whp at 14 psi...I want to do it by flowing more cfm's at lower boost.

If you are going the custom manifold and down pipe route then an EFR is the only solution.

Link to details?

This is yet another insanely idiotic thread of yours. Seems to me that you are hit and miss: sometimes you're smart and sometimes you go full retard.

Trying real hard to understand what it is you are even trying to ponder here. We've had this discussion many times over, do you have amnesia?

Id say go GT2560, so just get a used S15 turbo.

Q: "How big is too big?"

A: "All of it" +1

Definitely

Just make sure to run 4.7CF and post the plot upside-down so that your pathetic inconsistent bs numbers appear "for realz y0" and you can plaster them all over the forum despite no one being impressed or believing you

This is like one of those noob threads...

"Hay guise, I don't want to do anything the way that everyone else does it. I aspire to to build my car in the most difficult way possible in order to obtain purely random and inconsequential goals. It would be best if I could do this by sacrificing powerband, increasing costs, and without addressing weak points on the car. So what should I do?"

If the goal is 260whp, why not buy a 2560 and bolt it on your existing setup and have 260whp. If you're bored with the car and already don't drive it much, that seems like a good option rather than throwing a ton of money at it for a worse result.

+ eleventy billion

Every once in a while he gets drunk and makes a thread like this. Seriously, you can search his threads and you'll see this is probably like the 6th one EXACTLY like this that he's made.

Just like always, he will end up doing absolutely nothing and forget this thread even exists when he's finally sober.

Todd,

I mean no disrespect man, but when drunk try to stay away from the "create new thread" button ;)

I can't remember if I do or don't.

My goal used to be 200whp...then I did it. Then it was 235whp...then I did it.
I said 260 so that when I hit that number and eventually get bored, I'll swap out injectors and have plenty of turbo to go over the 300 mark.
I get it...the GT35 was a dumbassed idea. I really just wanted to see it in person to see the physical size. Vlad, you ran that Godspeed 3076...was that too much turbo? I mean, you made like 319 at 14psi??? (That came from memory) Is that right?? I think that might be too big for what I want, but I think the godspeed 2871 would be a little too small.

It's cool. I'm been laying off the sauce for a while anyway, and the difference from this and my other useless rant threads is that my car is in pieces right now. Therefore, it's some kind of progress?

18psi 04-09-2013 09:56 AM

Yes, I ran that on my previous build.

It was cool and I loved it. That was a weekend street car, with its main purpose being highway pulls against my buddies. I wanted something large to keep pressure (and temps) low so I could do pulls to 140 repeatedly and not melt anything. It was not a perfect concept or setup, so just cause it worked and just cause I liked it doesn't mean I'd want to repeat it, or think that everyone should mirror that setup.

In fact I'm going completely different with my current setup. You could say I learned a thing or two and my opinions and goals changed regarding a lot of things ;)

That's why I wanted a big compressor, and also because I'm sick of the JR M45 similar spool of my SR20. Is it a waste to run a large turbo at low boost and not "use it to it's fullest"? Maybe. When said turbo only costs $270 though, why not? I guess I need to find my happy medium between what I'm going from to what would be total unpractical over kill. That's why I mentioned the Godspeed 2876. If my memory serves correct, didn't Y8s make 265whp at 9.5psi on a 2876? I'm sure a godspeed would make a little less, because not garrett, but how would spool be?
