How do you keep exhaust heat out of car?
 

I'm COOKING!
I recently installed a turbo into my gutted/street legal autocross car.
No carpet/underlay.
After a 10 minute drive I cannot hold my hand to the transmission tunnel near the gas pedal for more than about 1/2 second without burning myself.
On a long drive the heat in the cab is gross.
I have an earlier fabricated steel(Corky I think)downpipe and a Begi style upper turbo heat shield

What are some solutions to keeping the turbo heat out of the car.I'm trying to keep the car light but weight is less of an issue if I can't drive it because I've turned it ino a car-B-Q.

I've read that header wrap is bad news for turbo downpipes.

The header wrap works well. It has not damaged my mild steel downpipe after many miles of use. My problem now is that I am parking outside and mice are chewing it off the pipe and using it too build nests!! They also chewed my spark plug wires. 7 enemy kills so far and counting.

I think the carpet would melt,seriously

powertoweight....i'm in the same boat with you. removed carpet. extra heat is nice in the winter.....but brutal in the summer. i think if i were to actually spend time trying to remedy it, i would install some sort of heat shielding to the body of the car. but i have too many projects lined up in front of that to bother tackling that subject. good luck.

As you can tell from the foot pad, its a scrap left over from my carpet, with insulation below it. Worked great today at a 100* track day, even with the heat blasting full for three sessions. I have a NACA duct pointed at my face but the carpet definitely helped my feet and legs stay cooler.

Put carpet in.

Reflectix from HD under carpet in my wife's BRG. It's like bubble wrap, but metallic. THe whole roll did her car and it weighs maybe 1 lb. The air pockets do the work. It's cheap, too. IIRC, it was $12 for the roll. Pull the old insuration off and rubber matting and use the carpet. Maybe another 4-5 lbs.

Has anyone added an aluminum heat shield to the underside on tunnel?
What was used?
I've seen some cars(don't remember what now,possibly BMW)that have a full coverage heatshield from engine to diff made out of nice textured aluminum

I'd rather keep the heat off the car than insulating the car from me.

I still burned my toe with carpet. I'm going to put heat sheilding on the trans and tunnel.

sell the miata and get a mini van with AC

Make cooling tin. Insert where needed. That's how oem's do it. And you don't have to order exotic heat mats, either.

reflective material on the underside of the floor. otherwise you're still heating the floor pan.

I put the reflective shield on the underside of my trans tunnel when doing my swap. Plus I've got dynamat/closed cell foam on the interior under the carpet. Shouldn't heat to omuch.

that stuff is seriously $7something for a 3' x 3' hunk?

Looks that way. I bought some way back with an order of the reflective hose covers. It might not have been Fel-pro though. I thought they had their own brand when I bought the crap. They still may, but it's not in the clearance section.

Is there something at Home Depot that costs way less?

They have this stuff too.

You need to buy a large sheet of heat retardant blanket. Clean the underside of the tunnel really good. I used alcohol on the last cleaning. Have the blanket cut to size and use 3M contact Cement. The one I used was in a blk can high strength don't remember the model number for it. Spray both the tunnel and the blanket wait a few
minutes then stick it. Make sure it's lined up right the first time. U won't get a second chance. I've done this on two miata's with great results one a SC and the other a turbo. If u do it right it won't fall off.
