How does this setup look?

It will go on a miata if I get one, or on my FWD BP until I get a miata.

JGS mani with flanges and such (possibly fs)
Also have a ceramic coated GTX manifold
Tial 38mm waste gate
Garrett .60/.63 turbo
Vortech FMU (anyone want this?)
Automoter Phantom a/f and 30psi boost guages
Oil PSI and Temp gauges
Modified starion FMIC
SAFC II
460cc injectors

I'm in about $1000 including the extra manifold and fuel management.

Now I think I just need a clutch, lines, pipes, and fixtures.

I think it should be good for over 250whp?

Newbsauce 01-09-2008 02:50 PM

Might as well get the 550 injectors if your planning on going higher. I'm not sure what they currently go for but the price difference isn't too bad.

What are you going to use to control timing (aka why the hell are you using an SAFC)? I'd pawn the SAFC out of the package and just get a megasquirt.. your getting a plethora of features and better fuel mapping. Not to mention autotune.

1967cutlass 01-09-2008 02:59 PM

For my BG I can get a GTX ECU to help with timing, but other than that I'm not particularly worried about it. I don't want to get a MS for my first turbo setup.

And I already bought the 460's, they were $50 so...

SloS13 01-09-2008 03:09 PM

needs moar wideband and better fuel/timing management.

I wish I had made accommodations for an external wastegate the first time around like you're doing.

Ahh can't go wrong for 50 bucks. Might as well have them cleaned too while you wait. I'm not familiar with the GTX ECU "helping" with timing and spark, but that would be my biggest concern.

1967cutlass 01-09-2008 03:15 PM

Here are my thoughts:

Worst case scenario with the timing is that it won't make as much power as it could. That being said this turbo is fairly big and it will still make PLENTY of hp.

Eventually I'll move onto megasquirt but for now I want to learn more about tuning and have a "Safe" setup without TOO much stuff I need to adjust at first.

The GTX ecu has different maps than the US ECU does. I doubt it can do anything for the spark but I haven't really heard of the stock coil/timing adjustment not working (on the BG) I don't know about the miata. Educate me?

I'm only looking for 250-260whp until I can get a stronger bottom end, by the way.

For a grand, that looks like a good parts list. But I agree- a wideband keeps me sane when adjusting tune OR just getting it running.

isn't the 323GTX a distributor driven car...am I wrong in thinking that its going to be a lot different than a miata ECU?

Yeah I wasn't trying to imply that I was going to use the GTX ecu in the miata, I know it won't work. I'm just saying that for the car I have now it would, although I'm not really sure if I need it.

I have no idea how to adjust timing on a miata, I've only done basic maintenance on one

1967cutlass 01-09-2008 03:57 PM

The wideband isn't a bad idea. Using a narrowband o2 sensor and the red-yellow-green AFR gauge is a primitive way to tune the car, although you would be able to get it into a condition of "not lean" which is better than nothing :)

How much are widebands?

Bryce 01-09-2008 04:00 PM

265 shipped with a pretty blue gauge (I <3 mine) from Wideopentuning or 180 shipped without gauge. The LC-1 is what most people with MS use.

It's pointless to try and tune off a narrowband.

I guess that's one of these "do it right the first time" things. Shit.

My goal for this project is to not make mistakes that everyone else did on their setup (like the external wastegate)

Once I sell off some parts I'll probably pick one up :bigtu:

Yeah I put in the category, "Do it right or blow up your engine" Hehe.

Now that I know all this stuff, I really wish I could go back and piece together my own setup. But good luck!:)

Yeah, the learning curve is STEEP for figuring out your first turbo setup. I've asked a lot of irritating and noob questions to a lot of people but I think I'm starting to figure this boost thing out

The good news is.. your probably not a teenager from SoCal.. so you have a good chance of being able to ask noob questions without being banned :)

Edited ;)

bryantaylor 01-09-2008 05:50 PM

i also say forget the SAFC and just go megasquirt. i had bandaids on my car, then went MS, the driveablity difference is night and day. you should be able to sell the safc and fmu and have enough money from them to buy a MS
