how to keep sh*t cool.

i have no problems with coolant temp, as it stays well within range, but i went on an hour trip last week and my hood above the turbo/exhaust got extremely hot. obviously its going to, right? anything i can do to easy this? next weekend im going to attempt to fab a radiator cover, and a tray under the engine. this only helps the radiator, right? i also have the back-of-the-hood spacer mod. ive heard it go both ways, that it doesnt help, then i read in a magazine that it does, and it was tested on a miata. what do you all do?

Change you name to Braineack. All the cool you need.

Do you have a heat shield above/around the turbo? If not, fab one up.

I have used the spacered hood before and it does work if you do a lot of intown driving. However, it made little change in the temp of the hood itself.

I saw someone who bought self-adhesive exhaust shielding and stuck it to the bottom of the hood above the turbo.

We all wish we could be as cool as you and splittime! I'm reminded everytime I log on.

+1 with the shield. Also a turbo blanket can help... but those are pricy

lol @ braineack. i have my exhaust manifold wrapped with that fiberglass heat wrap stuff, and ive been trying to finagle a heat shield. so everyone lives with a hot hood for the most part?

Savington 08-28-2009 05:40 PM

I have never run a heat shield on my car. 2 dozen track events later, I'll guarantee my hood has gotten hotter than yours ever has.

Why do you care if your hood is hot?

Yeah really. Turbo94, do you jump out of your car, rip off your clothes, and lay naked on the hood? We really don't want to know about that! (Well maybe Hustler does...)

hustler 08-28-2009 06:21 PM

I have nothing to add....but yes, duct the front and efficiency will skyrocket.

turbo94 08-28-2009 08:36 PM

HA! ha. no i dont do that... well, not all the time. i do love my car. the only reason i ask is thats one of the best ways to learn, and this is my first dabble in a forced induction build. and i s'pose i should get around to protecting the master cylinder and those heater hoses back there.
