How much noise is a turbo supposed to make?

My GT2560 is making a "tic" noise with every revolution. You can only hear it after the engine is off, and I don't know if it continues after the car is warm or not, since it's still on jackstands.

It's not a very loud noise, and it doesn't really sound like a blade is hitting anything, so I can't really figure out what it might be.

Since the last time I have driven the car (I never heard this noise before) I had the turbo off, had both compressor and turbine housing off, and painted them both, then put them back on.

So what might be making this noise, and is it fine, or do I need to take the stupid turbo off or something? I will try to get a video of it, but I can't imagine the sound will show up. I checked the oil supply line and it is full, so the turbo is getting oil I guess.

of all the noises I've heard from a turbo, ticking is definitely a new one lol

If you spin the compressor wheel by hand does it make the noise?

Yes. I tried to take a video, but the sound isn't loud enough to hear over the crickets outside.

18psi, I say ticking, but when the turbo is spinning faster than hand-spun-speed it's not really a tick anymore.

gearhead_318 03-22-2012 06:28 PM

Does the tick happen when the compressor wheel gets to a specific point in its rotation?

I'd take it off and take a good look at it if I where you.

skidude 03-22-2012 06:38 PM

Here's a video. You can't really hear it very well, but it might give you an idea.

I think it happens when the white mark on the compressor wheel is at about 4:00, but it's really hard to tell.

I've never done a video before, let's see if this works.

I can't make the video work. Here's a link to it on youtube (I hope):

Huh, got a white box when I tried to embed the video, and a video when I pasted a link. I'll leave it as evidence of my ignorance.

I have a brand new GT2560 sitting on my desk in front of me and it doesn't make any noise close to that, sounds like something isn't too healthy.

sturovo 03-23-2012 07:58 AM

The gt2560r has ball bearings? If you turn the impeller slowly with your finger while applying axial thrust do you feel any roughness?

skidude 03-23-2012 10:22 AM

Applying axial pressure doesn't seem to make any difference, pushing or pulling. I am trying to take the compressor housing off, but I had a rough morning so I took a deep breath and said "---- this noise, I'll try again later".

devin mac 03-23-2012 01:15 PM

yeah, I'd take it apart and inspect the housing for signs of abrasion. the only time i've had a turbo make anything remotely resembling that noise was when I had enough shaft play for the impeller to be making contact with the compressor housing.

Loose CHRA/turbine bolts, Inco heat shield behind the turbine is making that noise.

I did not know that heat shield was incolnel. Do chinachargers have one too?

Skidude turbo will always spin wayyyyyyy too fast for ticking. Even at idle.

It's not ticking when the car is running, you can't hear it then, but when I spin it by hand, or after I shut the car off and it's slowing down.

triple88a 03-24-2012 05:36 PM

Man that turbo sounds like its rumbling almost besides the clicking.

Stop fingering your turbo. I watched the video just now and that seems mostly normal.

Even if it is busted you're out $700 or whatever for Garrett's CHRA replacement scam.

Run it till it's dun.

If it doesn't sound like this...something is wrong

Naaah more like this ...time 1:14

Well, I took the turbo off, and removed the compressor housing, and it still makes the same noise. It sounds like it's coming from the compressor wheel, but it's really hard to tell. It is really barely audible.

I checked that, too. I took off the turbine housing (all the bolts were tight) and it still makes the noise even when I hold that shield. It sort of sounds like the noise is coming from behind the compressor wheel. I have no idea what could be causing it, though. Maybe it is a normal amount of noise, is a turbo supposed to be absolutely silent?
