How outdated is Maximum Boost by Corky Bell?

Hey guys. I picked up the book after seeing it mentioned in the forum. It was published in the late 90s but seems solid. I was wondering if there were any glaringly outdated sections of the book I should know about?

I believe Corky has since changed his mind about intercoolers. Otherwise the book is a good read.

FI theory is the same, EMS is what has changed mostly since then. And things like e85, etc.

I know I can essentially skip over the ECU section, as stuff like megasquirts didnt really exist back then. But ya, it seems when the book was written, intercoolers werent exactly the norm.

People reading Maximum Boost should be the ones that don't know basic FI theory and operation. It is the gateway you can say. Anything more than a basic overview will require additional research.

Great book though, I read it at least a couple times and I was already quite familiar with FI.

I knew very little about FI theory when I got mine, but my suggestion is just to take what he says about particulars with a grain of salt and to research more on top of what he tells you in the book to get a more "modern" look on things.

Most of the book is about theory. It teaches you how to read compressor maps, how to understand the dynamics of air mass vs. volume, there's a bit of math, lots of general principles... None of that stuff has changed over the years.

It's a book about turbocharging, not a book about engine management. There is some discussion of fuel and ignition management, but it's hardly the meat of the book.

I still keep this book close at hand near my desk.

I don't own a copy.

The equations in the book havent changed. Some of the theory and opinion isnt valid because technology has come such a long way in 20 years. Its a decent book, there still really isnt anything better out and trying to write something new on this topic would be silly with the internets.

Great advice in general. Even experts are wrong sometimes. Anyone who tells you differently isn't as much of an expert as they think.

Trackspeed will release it right after they release their turbo kit, tomorrow.

Because NA is best!

Braineack 12-27-2013 08:16 AM

It's a bit outdated, but still a worthwhile read.
