I emailed Thermwell products about the foam **** you guys use. product number fv516 has a temperature rating of 190 degrees but the fiberglass is fire retardant.
So it will fall off but it wont burn. Probably OK to use if it will stick. (similar to what Hyde said)

Thanks for the report back, first hand experience is a huge bonus. I'm thinking this is the route I'll finally take.

It actually did surprisingly well. The only place where there's a gap in adhesion was on the ebrake, where it needs to go up and over two different levels. I could have cut it and put on both, but it's working fine with that gap even. Very nicely sticky.

And had some left over after making the brake master heat shield etc.
it was easy to install with the engine and tranny out, but it would be hard to do with them on

Killer, thanks for the reply. Ordered 14sq/ft this afternoon, along with some other stuff. I'm looking to get similar coverage and didn't want to short myself. It will sit for a while until the engine/trans comes out again, but that shouldn't be an issue.
I noticed that DEI has part numbers for both "Floor and Tunnel Shield" and "Floor and Tunnel Shield II" floating around out there. Both sets of part numbers are searchable and orderable on Amazon. I'm wondering why they revised the product? I bought the II FWIW
Also ordered DEI Cool Tape for the seams, because anything worth doing is worth overdoing

Here's a solution for the transmission tunnel from a local miata shop.
Mainly works on street cars, so sounds like this is a cheap easy and effective way to go.

Is that Suppressor Acoustical & Heat Control Mat or Super Sonic Acoustical Mat ?
I'm pulling the dash this weekend and the plan is to run DEI - Under Carpet Lite over the tunnel and as far up the firewall as I can get it, and then follow it up with the before mentioned Floor and Tunnel Shield II on the outside next time the engine is out.
I have a roll of RattleTrap XXX in the garage I bought for my 70's F250 that I could press into service, but that ****'s heavy. I used some on the rear deck and vertical section behind the seats in the Miata and it helped a lot, but I'm not sure I want to use all 30lbs of the stuff.
