how reliable?
 

so i have a chance to purchase a mitsubishi TD04-13T turbo and the top mount intercooler off a 07 wrx. buddy of mine cuttin me a hell of a deal, says if i supply the materials he can fab up the manifold, piping, etc. i have a 97 1.8, 172k on the body 82k on the engine.

cost wise, he's charging $150 lol, now this doesnt include some engine management i will probly have to have (megasquirt?) just trying to get some feedback on this from actual miata owners haha.

You should go in the meet and greet sections. Show pics of the car and naked chicks. If the only thing you have right now is a turbo and an intercooler you got a long way to go!

What is your budget on a turbo set up?

the most common and annoying answer, cheap as possible, yet reliable at the same time lol.

im still leaning towards a s/c and just doing it right. get a clutch/flywheel, full exhaust, megasquirt, good intercooler (TDR?)

the main goal is to stay under $10k for the whole car, and im at 4700, lol.

If there hasn't been a change since the 04, or 03 wrx turbo, it's a good match for the car.... that said, the 3 bolt flange will require some form of custom manifold, or adapter. (I've seen, driven with custom etd manifold). Then you'll also need to do a custom downpipe as well.... IC, etc....

The MS + injectors, would work nicely for the tuning side....

SCs are good too, but hey, that is a good price for the turbo for sure.

Flier Sounds like your buddy has some skills that turbo will do you well for a good bit of hp, and the IC ugh fi thatis realy what you wanna run ;) is also just fine. 150$ for the turbo etc is decent and depending on the cost of mats on the manifold and intake piping you could get away with a ebay stage 3 clutch and pp and be less than 1k $ potentialy. Bringing your total to 5700$ and having 200 whp
The real expense for you will be the EM you can use a fpr setup just fine at that power lvl. A ms pnp is a very robust solution as well, and if you feel real brave build your own MS to save mad cash. GL man

well ive read around, thought about it. figured im going to set my car up first, wider wheels/tires, exhaust, clutch/flywheel, other misc maintenance stuff, lsd, and then get boost.

ill post back after a few months haha, hopefully ill get a feel for different type of boosted miatas with miatas at the gap. speaking of which, many people from these forums going to be there this year?

If your serious about boosting, and plan on MS I'd suggest starting with the engine management portion first. By the time you get it all figure out, WBO2 installed, tuned, and larger injectors, you'd have a really good understanding of what else you'd want to make your car go go go.

Plus odd ball stuff shows up in the forsale section sometimes, and you'd be able to take advantage of the opportunites put forth to you...

I'd be very interested in where you'd mount a WRX tmic and how you'd plumb it.

An ic is just a big ass heat collector dude, And any plumbing would be custom just like all of our installs. If his buddy can make manifolds then turning a TMIC into a FMIC is no big deal and making a few pipe bends is also easy. It might seem intimidaitng but realy it is all quite simple.

If you picture a tmic mounted between the engine and firewall the stock WRX piece has dual inlets (maybe 1" x 2" spaced say 7" apart) on the bottom near the firewall and then a single outlet on the side facing the engine.

I'm sure that fitting it to a Miata could be done, I'm just interested in how they'd go about it. And if it'd be worthwhile as opposed to just spending $200 on an ebay fmic setup.

Well blocking one inlet comes to mind. JB weld or something would work.

Well believe it or not, we talked about just keeping it a topmount. Get a different hood of course lol, we werent serious but it was just a fun thought. A fmic would probly be more effective anyways.

Another thing about using the actual ic off the wrx is the BOV is on the ic, pretty weird but thats what my wrx friends were saying. Also i'd probly use the same turbo off my friend's 04 wrx instead of the 07, he mentioned something about the oil line being a bitch. We didnt get into it but the 04 is the same turbo just more miles.

Im more than likely going with a path like Jefe said, classifieds on the forums are always nice, thats how i got a used old style FM 2.5 suspension package and a LE lip for my dad's car all for 600 :-D. And yes i just reffered to the R package lip as a LE lip, it had it first lol
