:bigtu: Saw that last night and couldn't pass it up. I would have thrown it up here and asked about it, but I figured one of you assholes would have swiped it out from underneath me.

Yeah, that's a Garrett GT2554R for $300. :D

"However a garret ball bearing rebuild kit is always recommended when buying used turbo"

Gee... since there is no such thing... its an awesome idea. I hate when stuff is made up in auctions.

Otherwise, should be a good pickup assuming its in as good condition as mentioned.

Savington 08-14-2007 02:00 PM

I emailed the guy last night, and he said it came off a CA18DET as a working turbo. I have high hopes.

If that's the stock turbo you got ripped off... you can get the stock nissan T25s for about half that.

samnavy 08-14-2007 03:13 PM

Nope, definitely not a CA18det turbo. I'm pretty sure those were .48/.48 or .42/.48 and definitely not BB.

The GT2554r was standard on the Mazdaspeed Protege, and I think that was the only OEM application for it anywehre ... you won't find them in a junkyard... no telling where this one came from as the "ball bearing rebuild kit" comment indicates the seller is clueless. They are .80a/r compressors though, so maybe the seller did get it right.

Don't forget the 3-bolt compressor outlet adapter. ATP is really the only place unless you're just going to Dremel down the bolt flanges so it will accept a coupler.

If it it a GT2554r, then you got a good deal at $300 if it's in good condition. If it is in fact a journal bearing T25 from a CA18det or SR20det, then you paid too much... hope you used Paypal, definitely "claimable" for misrepresentation.

A garett ball bearing rebuild kit consists of a brand new turbo and a garbage bag to put the old one in.

Loki047 08-14-2007 04:16 PM

Err arent the GT25 ball bearing watercooled? Im only seeing oil.

m2cupcar 08-14-2007 04:41 PM

both oil and water are there in this pic. Oil feed on right, water exit on left.

Haha crappy laptop screen and flourescent lighting. Didn't see it at all.

Garrett bb turbo's are repairable.... A guy in England does it.

It is, however impossible to get parts...So all parts are used from 'old' turbo's.

I Had damaged the bb housing( the part where the balls are places in.)
BTW the center housing (gt2560r) consist off 2 bb mechanisms , both carrying 6 balls Turbine and exh looked interchangable.
If you need to get a new compressor wheel (mine did) don't touch it.
As soon as you remove the shaft the balls are free and impossible to get back in.(that's where it got damaged...)

fmowry 08-15-2007 02:04 PM

Limit Engineering in the US (AZ) does it too.

I dont understand why they are impossible to rebuild....I'm sure they just don't want people to know that they can put beaings from their rollerblades in there. :gay:

greddymx5 08-15-2007 02:27 PM

The exhaust side bearring is impossible to reach.
When reassemble you have to put the exh bearing in b4 the shaft.
If you try to insert the shaft the bearrings fall out of place.

The only way to get to this is through the oil exit or the intake side (about 1/2 inch opening.
Its an achievement by itself to get the bearring into place.
And you need a lot off force to get the shaft in.(tapping with a smal hamer)
Using an iron tube i could get/keep it into place.
After that the compressor side, but you cannot move the shaft anymore...
So i tried to push in the bearrings...

The rings that hold the bearrings appeared to be some sort off hard plastic.
It could not take the force i was givng it..

I think the plastic is the reason the bb units need to be watercooled...

Savington 08-15-2007 02:35 PM

Even if I have to spend $300 to have Garrett rebuild it, it's cheaper than a new turbo. :D

Splitime 08-15-2007 02:38 PM

Basically the cost of repairing a BB... since so little people do it... is like buying a new turbo. It almost never ends up being worth it, especially for the smaller/"cheaper" gt25/28 size turbos.

greddymx5 08-15-2007 02:43 PM

Paid around 200dollar, including balancing and shipping from and to the UK.(and 60 for a compressor wheel, bought seperately).

GOOD PRICE !!

RusMan 08-16-2007 12:45 AM

You can exchange your old chra for a brand new one through garrett. I did that and got a brand new turbo for about 350

grippgoat 08-16-2007 08:21 PM

Garrett Ball-Bearing Service Program:
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...BBService.html

Basically, you send your turbo to a distributor, they decide if it's eligible, and then you get a new cartridge at a discount, and they send the old cartridge back to Garrett.

If it spins freely, and there's no shaft play to speak of, I'm just gonna slap it on the car.

Saml01 08-16-2007 10:13 PM

I cant believe I missed that. :crx:
