I finally started and bought a turbo!

I am finally getting started and got a GT2870r ( I think that it is what it is). It is small and ball bearing. I only want 5.5 psi and the quickest spool as possible. I am assuming I need the following:

(Please tell me if you have suggestions or I am on crack.)

HKS cast manifold for B6ze (Where is the best place to buy?)
Vortech FMU
Downpipe (any bolt ons available?)
Crossover pipe (Ditto?)
Boost gauge
Cone filter
wastegate actuator for 5.5psi (one on the turbo is like at 10, I think)
What else do I need to order?
(clamps, fittings, lines, and other little stuff will be available at the shop)

I will be doing it at a custom turbo shop but I want it to be as simple and as fast as an install as possible. The miata would be perfect for me with 135rwhp. I am old (35) and that is how much I need to make my curvy backroad drive to work fun. Thanks for any help, this is a great forum.

Check out BEGi for the mani. They have a deal going on for $295, which is a pretty good price for their quality.

The downpipe will vary slightly for different style turbos.

I've seen one or two stock crossover pipes used, modified however necessary, so its possible.

"I only want 5.5 psi and the quickest spool as possible....... 135rwhp"

Sounds like a greddy kit..

Simple, fast install without having a "kit" :dunno:

I like your turbo choice. I have a gt28rs sitting under my bed... and eventually for the 93 miata I picked up yesterday.

Can anyone confirm the manifolds that will work with that turbo for the 1.6L and allow a 3in DP?

Or does anyone know of sources for miata head flanges so I can make up a custom manifold?

Ike 06-27-2006 06:12 PM

Well, if you decide to sell it and go greddy, please let me know.

Thanks!! :)

Ike

I am about to buy a "like-OBX" manifold, it will surely crack someday but I hope it won't crack too much...

The vendor sells them on eBay and I will buy one very soon.

Splitime 06-27-2006 08:55 PM

I guess just give feedback and keep us updated on that OBX manifold... I really should get a friend to create a pseudo log and shift turbo up front so I can fit a nice large DP back there.

Time to find flanges...

www.flipsidecustoms.com has some flanges laying around for sure. I would contact them and let em know that Kelly sent ya.

I know, you are right. However...
1. I wanted a ball bearing turbo. (very small difference but every time I spool, it ads up)

2. Plastic intake piping + boost = long term unreliability. (I already have a nice unreliable car, my rx7)

3. My buddy who owns the shop would kick my a** if I bought a kit, otherwise it would save me a big pain.

Which FMU / ratio should I get?

Braineack 06-28-2006 04:50 PM

12:1 with the stock pump. 8:1 with the 190 HP

rotaryjunky 06-28-2006 07:05 PM

Thanks. I will order one of the Begis tomorrow.

jetrep 07-05-2006 08:50 AM

wouldn't the gt2554r be a much better turbo for this application?

Al Hounos 07-05-2006 10:28 AM

That's what that one looks like to me.

Sounds good.

Can anyone confirm that this is a GT28 series turbo? I need to confirm for my flange on the Begi mani I ordered. They don't have them from the factory yet so I have time before they send it out. Any help is appreciated.

rotaryjunky 07-11-2006 05:11 PM

What spark plugs should I switch to? Can you still get zfr7 ngks?
