I think I'm going to wuss out

Might be changing my tune here. Brain isn't building MS anymore. Chad isn't building MS anymore. Matt said that they don't have a good PNP NB solution yet. I don't feel comfortable about building MS for an NB myself. So, I'm thinking about going super-minimal.

T25 (have)
Begi DP (have)
Homebuilt mani (have flanges)
No intercooler
FPR (the only thing I need)
Pierburg pump (have)
Stock exhaust
Stock clutch
Stock timing
Stock injectors

I have swapped emails with Stephanie about their new low cost timing and fuel system. As she hasn't disclosed pricing and availability publicly, I won't go into it, but one significant limitation is currently dissuading me from investing the money in that system. Not saying when it is released I won't do it, but right now leaning away.

I know someone here is running stock timing on an NB, can't remember who, but I have seen it in his sig.

I would limit it to 5-6 psi, whatever I could run on stock timing. No, it won't be perfect. No, it won't be super quick, but at least I could get out of my own way. It should get me 140-145 WHP or so for $600 so still a good return on investment. It's not the money, though. I'd gladly pay for the MS if I could get one built, which would let me do what I wanted to do in the first place.

If you are running a boosted NB on stock timing, please let me know.

Otherwise, what are your thoughts on this?

How do you plan on using the FPR and Pierburg with non-return fuel system?

Crap. I don't know. Should have bought an NA.

There have been posts here detailing a scheme that should work. I didn't pay too much attention because I don't have an NB, but I remember that it didn't seem difficult to implement.

SloS13 06-24-2008 10:04 AM

Have you looked into the AEM F/IC?

Zabac 06-24-2008 10:13 AM

Stein, as I see it, you have time and are not in a hurry, make sure you mention that to Chad as he may then do it slowly in his minimal spare time, he is a pretty stand up guy and loves to help people out if he can. I'd hate to see you not go through with this.

More difficult than easily building a MS.

just bought a house. I dont have a spare $1000 for car parts at the moment. I gotta build a garage!

chucker 06-24-2008 11:26 AM

jack

What's it cost to build a garage in D.C. these days?

I just got a quote for $48k for 24x24x10. That didn't include the shit I was going to do myself: trim, paint, roof, plumbing, electrical, driveway/drainage, permits.

$48k gets me a slab and minor grading ($19k), framing, T-111 siding, OSB roof sheathing, a human door, two single car doors and a couple lousy windows. Period.

Bullshit. I'm going to do a steel building instead. I figure after the slab, a kit and a couple day-laborers to help me put it together, I should be done for <$20...

Holy crap. My insulated 30x56 steel building with windows, full eaves, two overhead garage doors with full concrete cost me $15,500. I did my own grading. This was six years ago, though but still...

+1

Seems the NA is the all-around solution, eh?

sv650_ck 06-24-2008 12:17 PM

Hate to mention it in this forum, but my pc pro ($300 w/o pnp harness) has been working really well on my '00 with stock timing @~7psi (intercooled). I was originally holding out for the mini-exede but they're still not available.

whoa.

building everything myself except what I dont have equipment to do, I doubt it would be over 7000 for a one-car garage. probably less. depends on how hungry contractors are. btw, i'm building it in northern virginia.

jayc72 06-24-2008 02:05 PM

I built my garage last fall. It's 22X24X9 and has an attic that's 10X24X5. The concrete slab was already there so I didn't have to do that work or "pay" for it. For the finished structure and electrical I am into it for about $10K. I'm running gas to it this fall and installing a furnace, I've already insulated it. To have the same thing built by someone would be about $25-30K. The only work I didn't do was the shingles, the pitch was pretty steep and I'm not a fan of heights.

FYI DIYautotune can build you a piggyback MS with miata mods for under 400 i believe.

I PM'ed Matt and he wasn't that enthusiastic about building one for my NB.

Stein,
I bought a emanage blue with a boomslang pnp harness for my 1999 took less than an hour to install . I love it I'am running Mazda (323) 350cc injectors @60 psi (stock) I'am also running stock timing with A/F at wot in the 11's -low 12's (no knock) 93 octane FM 02 siginal modifier, 8psi boost (intercooled) and a NGK wideband to check A/F. this set-up works well for me with lots of room for adjustment.

Zarniwoop42 06-25-2008 04:01 AM

hee hee... 60 psi! I'm jealous.

Edit: Actualy im drunk and did not read the entire post, or the entire sentence for that matter, so I guess that wins me the "douche of the day" prize!

thirdgen 06-25-2008 08:17 AM

As you can see in my signature, I am running a voo-doo box, T25 turbo at 7psi, old style FM II intercooler, w/ no timing retard. No knock, and I use 93 octane. I get 26 MPG driving to work everyday, and I don't stay out of boost very often. My car runs 14's with a stock clutch that doesn't hold for shit. My setup was pretty much DIY, and I might have like 2 grand into it? The only thing I would've done different, was fuel management. Voo-doo is very very easy to use, but I am at the limit now, and that's with 7psi, but I have between 11.5 and 12 AFR to redline at full boost.
