Identify this DIY kit???

So I found this for sale online and can't really identify what manifold that is. It's supposed to be for a 1.8L. The picture is super low-res and the seller doesnt have any other pictures and does not know the brand. It doesnt seem like a ebay one from the looks of it but I can be wrong. The turbo is supposed to be a garret m24, IC is supposed to be FM and the BOV is supposed to be a Tail. No fuel management included.

Decently priced at 350 but not sure if it's worth the drive to check it out since it looks pretty used.

What do you guys think?

Heres the pic:

Not DIY. BEGi (or very early FM if you will).

the whole kit for $350 or just the mainfold?

mspec 09-27-2011 11:46 AM

whole kit

Braineack 09-27-2011 11:49 AM

it's a horrible idea. $350 way too much... now please give me the source so I can have a few choice words with teh seller..

mspec 09-27-2011 11:51 AM

Lol

Braineack 09-27-2011 12:01 PM

honeslty, at that price, just make sure it's legit. even if the turbo wasn't there it's a good deal.

mspec 09-27-2011 12:04 PM

Awesome! Thanks for the info! I'll go check it out and post an update on how things end up.

Ah the days when JimB pipes looked like a good upgrade...that looks like one endless charge pipe...

CarWhore 09-27-2011 05:43 PM

looks like a good deal

So I picked it up =)

Here are some pictures. I have a feeling its missing some piping but I can be wrong again. I know it needs oil lines. Please let me know if theres something odd-looking or if its missing some other components. Thanks! :noob:

missing a stud on the manifold

codrus 09-28-2011 05:25 PM

Looks like an old FM3 to me, from around 1999. IIRC, JasonC installed one on someone else's car once, I seem to recall hearing that it was a major PITA to get the EWG installed underneath the manifold, and had a lot of issues with those same EWG studs/bolts/whatever backing out.

ROFL! That's a blast from the past!

In the low rez pic in the first post I recognize the copper pipe I cut as part of a coolant reroute. This is from like 2003. It was installed on a '94.

The turbo is a BB GT2554 with some extrude-hone type polishing on both the compressor and turbine snails.

The BOV setup works very well but has a silly pipe that goes across the engine bay behind the radiator.

I would convert it to IWG and sell the Tial. That EWG setup is Lucifer's progeny. Impossible to install. Those two bolts will take you all day to tighten. Then they will loosen in one track day.

That same kit made 280 whp on a high-reading dynojet at 14 psi with a GT2560 with its even earlier, and original owner, in 2001. (Probably 255 whp on a Dynapack)

mspec, whom did you buy it from? Last I heard of the kit (and the car) Rick Weldon of PR Motorsports had bought it, like 5 years ago. The owner upgraded to an F430 cabriolet. (which i got to drive several hours on mountain roads) :giggle:

With what fuel control? Imagine that same setup with a MS. Hmmm technology...

Inconel studs? Ask Vash about the that setup, I believe it was the same one he had before going Artech.

OP, if you haven't already planned to replace all the silicone couplers, I'd suggest you make that plan.

FM3 crew reprezent :winner:

That is a awesome deal you got for those parts. Just spend some time cleaning the down pipe up and you'll be set.

The wastegate honestly is not that bad once you do it a few times. I can disassemble and reassemble my hot side in about 2-1/2 to 3 hours. Sounds bad, but those parts will outlive the car ;)

I usually assemble most of the kit outside of the car before the reinstall:

Also, you're going to need some longer exhaust studs for the larger corners on this manifold. If you can't find anything locally, contact the good man at MiataRoadster.com; he was kind enough to modify my turbo stud order at no extra cost (after I placed it, too).

TEC2 and 550cc injectors. The TEC2 will make as much power as any of the newer ECU's. 60-2 wheel, very accurate ignition control with stout coils.
