I'm well vested in aluminum.
I think I'm good for heat shielding....

Looks good, needs more compressor...
|
dang thats cool.......wink wink
|
Wait did you seriously mount the heatshield to the body of the car then bolt a bracket from the heatshield to the motor?
I know you have mazcomp mounts but I don't think that bracket wannabe brace will do much for you. |

the tab on the valve cover flexes with any movement, i thought of this, otherwise i would have done it differently. but yeah, with my MSM mounts, the motor barely moves. If i can find the stock little rubber piece form the airbox, I'll swap it in.
|
Cool stuff then. They're heatshield is stout as heck to begin with let alone with extra bracing. I'm jealous, seriously you better lock your shit so I don't steal it.
|
I had to cut off the rear mounting tab, took forever with my cut off wheel.... like 30x thicker than the flimsy 18g cold air box I made :)

Just use a little leftover heater hose or drain hose.
that would be a lot of leftover.....if you look at the mounting tab near the master, I have a 1" spacer. The shield was designed for a 2860, my T3 needed more headroom. The stock bushing that goes there would be perfect, I just dunno if I still have it, I'll have to look in all my boxes 'o stuff. But I've been averaging 90-100*F intake temperatures in cruise on 80-90* days....can't wait to see what this does for me. Before I button it up I'm going to drill a few hole below the filter itself. This should help promote airflow through the naca duct, as the fender well below it should be a low pressure zone. |
that aluminum heat shield over the turbine is going to crack like nobody's business. flexing aluminum doesn't have nearly the same fatigue life as steel. make a springy version?
|
Nice stuff.. Do you have a pic of that airbox out of the car?

no. but imagine a triangle bent 90*. i can take one next weekend.
or you can picture it from this: http://boostedmiata.com/random/cold_air_box.jpg |
I want one, prices?

Nice looking piece |
The two on the manifold are BEGi pieces. that are probably 14g or 12g. I had to alter the turbine heatshield as it wasn't deigned for my turbo. The rear mounting tab also interfered with my heat hose, as BEGi reroutes the heater core return line. I chopped it off. SO I was left with only one mounting point, and that wouldn't fly. So I riveted a strip of 18g aluminum and attached it to the valve cover.
The only other spot I can see working, it attaching it to bracket off the brake proportioning valve....I decided against this, as I wouldn't want a heat source directly connected to something my brake fluid flows through. So I had to deal with the valve cover. I have seen plenty of shields mounted in the fashion without issue....and the bowser heatshield its something like 18g or 20g aluminum. the cold air box I made myself with 18g aluminum sheet. It cost $15.99. I believe it was 25" x 25". I used a cardboard template and then traced it on the aluminum. I cut it out with an air nibbler. I cut out the hole with a 4.5" hole saw. I bent it in a saw horse. is not hard to make, maybe an hour of my time. |

FWIW all of the bowser shields are mounted to the VC and that same tab.

O RLY?
Hopefully I have better luck with mine, since the rearmost piece has been hacked to clear the Begi DP. |

Hopefully I have better luck with mine, since the rearmost piece has been hacked to clear the Begi DP. If I were you, I'd hog out the hole on the body mount and use a rubber isolator on top and bottom, and only loosely install the retaining nut. Give it plenty of wiggle room. I'm replacing my shield with a blanket when the shipment comes in. |
Is this picture to scale? That's a 4.5" hole? If I were you, I'd hog out the hole on the body mount and use a rubber isolator on top and bottom, and only loosely install the retaining nut. Give it plenty of wiggle room. |
I'll look around work for one. Unfortunately that's the kind of thing that would get kind of blindly tossed somewhere, probably the trash.
A cut rubber hose would probably do the same thing anyway. |
I'll figure something out. i know i have one...two or three actually, just gotta figure out where i put them...
im just really curious to see what my intake temps look like now. since I've been running around with no shielding for the last 2 years. |

no. but to correct myself, the hole is 4 1/8".
honestly, go get a piece of cardboard and make the magic happen yourself. http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miata/070308_13411.jpg I don't think it took but 15 minutes to come up with my template. |
You are overlooking something, I'm lazy.

Got my template made up. Scott, what did you use to seal the top?

looks good!
ir anything, trace out the hole shape, add two wings to bend 90* down, and somehow attach them....a piano bracket would be cool on the far end, with a simple nut and bolt near the headlight motor to secure it (easy reach with hand if ever need to open it up. |
Yeah, i'll make sure to incorporate mounting tabs when I make it out of metal. Is there anu reason you didnt make a top and chose to just seal it against the hood?

one was easier than the other... http://www.demotivateus.com/posters/...nal-poster.jpg (or to spell correctly for that matter, it seems.) |
Sorry threadjack
Brain, in your 4th pic next to the air filter you have some sort of gadget that looks like it plugs in to the AFM socket and breaks it out in to 2 cables for AIT and something else. Is that what it is and if so where did it come from I want one!! /threadjack |

Aaaawwwwww Got all excited there, I dont like just pushing pins into my maf soket. Wanted something nice and permenant
|
It's all back together and working great. Intake temps seem to be on average a lot lower. Sitting at a 5min light they never went above 95*F, I used to see +110*F. Before the fans kicked on, maybe 15-20 minutes into my drive the temps never saw over 10*F above ambient. Very happy.
Now I just need to mod this BEGi cold air box to work with my naca duct and intake pipe! :) http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...s/CIMG1724.JPG http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...s/CIMG1725.JPG http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...s/CIMG1726.JPG http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...s/CIMG1727.JPG http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...s/CIMG1728.JPG http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...s/CIMG1729.JPG |

was able to mod the box just fine. I need to still rivet some aluminum sheet to cover the now large hole, then put the lip i bent up in a vice to flatten it out. But It's pretty much done now. http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...s/DSC01117.jpg http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...s/DSC01118.jpg http://www.boostedmiata.com/new_miat...s/DSC01119.jpg |
very nice. Im jealous. Now all you gotta do is show some love to the valve cover.

btw- I just noticed that this road work sign I found on the side of the road is aluminum sheet. Nice and thick too... hmmm.

here you go matt and ben:
I took a piece of heater hose, filled it with silicone and then stuck two bolts on either end. gave it a session in the oven and a few days in the glovebox to completely cure. screwed it and and will loosely tighten the top nut. allows for lots of movement. |
