Intercooler piping setup

so ive been gathering all my turbo parts and this is the last piece of the puzzle.

Im going to run n ebay universal kit but from what ive seen there are a few different types of kits with different angles and bends. well here goes

this is the kit i was eyeing cuz of the price point.

#1

Fmic Intercooler JDM Race Black 12 Piece Piping Kit BOV Adapter Couplers | eBay

#2

Red Aluminum Turbo Intercooler Piping Kit 12pcs RX7 RX8 Miata Protege MX3 MX6 | eBay

#3

2 5" Blue Intercooler Turbo Pipe Piping Universal Kit 8PC | eBay

#4

Universal High Quality Polished Intercooler 2 5" 8PC Piping Kit Aluminum Black | eBay

so the 1st kit comes with a fmic and bov but i already have the same intercooler but its the same price as the others. only thing im gonna need is a bung welded on for my GM IAT.

thoughts? suggestions?

any thoughts?

It all depends on your application. What turbo, how it's clocked, PS/AC configuration, size intercooler, blah blah blah...

You will have to do some cutting and fabricating anyway so it's really a game of grab a random kit with the most parts and make it fit. Add adapters if needed. Siliconeintakes has pretty good prices.

Why weld a bung? Drill and tap baby.

the biggest problem i had was on the cold side, Hot side is super easy, but the cold side has the IAC right under the throttle body so it was difficult to pipe it, if you look at begi setups or flying miata they have a piece that turns like 45 degrees then turns back a little then down

Wuga 10-02-2013 09:57 AM

and I would go with #2

Gotcha. I think imma to with #1 just because it's got the intercooler and bov also and it's the same price. I already have the same intercooler so I'll just sell the black one

Wuga 10-02-2013 05:43 PM

dont use that bov, you'll definitely have vac leak

Wuga 10-02-2013 05:43 PM

i had good luck with siliconeintakes universal bov, no leaks with that

Yeah I tried to plan my intercooler, it was a waste of time. You just have to buy a bunch of pieces and elbows/couplers. You just sit with your car and the kit and go to town. It isn't complicated but takes longer than you think.

I just bought a box of pipes, couplers and clamps from cx racing. I have about a billion un need couplers and t-bolt clamps now. Granted I got the whole package for less than the amount of t-bolt clamps I got should have cost.

alright so i bought the first kit just cuz it came with all the same stuff as the 2nd kit but with extras. i plan on getting a real greddy bov and aluminum flange and ditching the cast flange and pipe.

i would think that the cold side would be easiest. i plan on tapping the cold side for thr GM IAT and sealing it up.

Thursday 10-03-2013 10:29 PM

was thinking of ditching the ebay bov and running this one

Greddy Type S Style BOV Flange

any thoughts on quality? wuga is this the one you were mentioning?

dieselmiata 10-03-2013 11:08 PM

I have one of those. It leaks. Not terribly, but it leaks. It also makes an annoying whistle as its closing when coming slowly off throttle. I would get one of the SSQV knockoffs if you're aiming for a cheap BOV.

I lucked out and sniped a real SSQV for 50 bucks, so keep an eye out. Deals happen.

That Greddy knockoff isn't bad, but it does have some annoying attributes.

Thursday 10-04-2013 12:16 AM

Ehh. Maybe 5 years ago I woulda been all over those hks bovs but the sound is so annoying to me now.

Does it leak under boost or what? I'm running a mspnp2 so I'm not really worried about unmetered air. And we're you referring to the one in the intercooler kit or the silicone intakes one??

dieselmiata 10-04-2013 12:29 AM

The silicone intakes one. It leaks under boost and really bad at idle, but idle doesn't matter if you have an MS.

The cheap SSQV just functions better than the cheap Greddy. You can remove the insert to get rid of the chirp and it will sound just like the knock off Greddy.

Thursday 10-04-2013 12:36 AM

Hmm. Ok. Maybe I'll see how the eBay one works first. Worst case scenario I'll just grab an authentic greddy and use the existing flange.

Any other recommendations or things to be careful/aware of while doing my piping? In regards to the iat and bov can I mount them next to each other ( within about 8 inches and on either side of the pipe)?

Thursday 10-04-2013 12:37 AM

And if there is any really helpful threads about piping that anyone knows of link em! I've looked at one on cr.net but it wasn't really anything informative.
