interesting oil drain thread...
heres an interesting thread I found on m.net about oil drain alternative...
http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread...24#post2057024 I run with a tapped oil pan these days, but for several years I had the HKS kit on my car, and this had the oil return via the dipstick pipe. The construction was as follows: a 3" length of 5/8" id pipe was flattened at one end so that it was the same size as the dipstick pipe. The dipstick pipe had a section removed about 2" from the bottom, for about half the diameter. The flattened end of the larger pipe was machined so that it covered the open section of the dipstick tube and brazed into place. As far as flow is concerned, if I was using a turbo that was oil cooled only, like the greddy and some older T3 types, then I might be worried about the ability of this method to get rid of the oil; but with a modern water cooled turbo, even a sleeve bearing one like the Garrett one that came in the HKS kit you should have no issues. whatcha think? +/- |

Anything not to tap the pan. Forget about alternatives, everyone who is nervous to tap it (myself included) realizes how easy it is once they've done it. It's easier than modifying the dipstick tube at any rate, plus these people have to know the best oil drain method from the turbo is straight to the pan. |

I have never seen what the oil looks like when it comes out of the turbo. The air/oil froth I can picture, but I wish I could actually see.
This seems like a great concept. But when I look at the -10AN line I have for my drain, then look at the dipstick tube....no way. The AN line can fit right over the tube with room to spare. And when the guys above who really know their stuff think its a bad idea...it's gotta be. I think the best way is just to drill the pan. It scared the shit out of me to do it. If you take your time, and measure at LEAST 3 times I don't think you'll have a problem. |
