Internal or External wastegate on a T3?
I am considering choosing a 60 trim T3 .48 exhaust a/r. Should I bother spending extra money going with an external wastegate? I couldn't find the factory spec for it (10 psi?).
I intend to megasquirt, stock bottom end. |
It will work fine internal at 10psi- especially if you're going with the EBC on the MS. BUT if you ever think you'll upgrade, it's far easier to build your manifold/dp setup for the EWG now while it's all apart.
|
I'm running the same turbine @ 12 psi internal wastegate and have no issues with overboost and only a few with boost spike (due to crappy MBC). As long as you setup your internal gate correctly you shouldn't have any trouble at "reasonable" street power levels.
|
If you have the option, and the money, external is king. EWGs will ALWAYS provide better boost control than IWGs.
|
I have the same turbine and haven't had any problems with the IWG but thinking back I wish I would have spent the extra money and went with external from the beginning.
If you can afford it do it. |
external, and dump it.

I think I am leaning towards external now. Some good insight in Corky's comments, first topic.
It sounds like the larger the exhaust side, the bigger the issue with internal wastegates. |
I'm going external, it should be worth the trouble in the end. If not i have a internal WG adapter i'll sell you.
|
+1 on the external wastegate. but make sure you are venting all the runners when you place your wastegate on the manifold.
|
If you really don't want to spend to much you can always get an EWG manifold and block it and run interal at first and then later upgrade but in the end you will spend more.
I am going EWG from the start so I have room to grow and I will be able to get the most stable boost when having to run low boost at first. |
