Hey guys,

I don't know if my supercharger questions belong in this area but I'm sure a mod will fix it if I screwed up.

I'm essentially piecing together a S/C kit starting with an M45 JRSC, just the charger. I have a few questions that I am pretty confused about no matter how much reading I'm doing.

A few quick specs:
Car: 1991 Miata 1.6L
Charger: M45 Jackson Racing with 1.8L throttle body already in place
Management: Megasquirt V3

Question 1

Do I really need a dummy throttle body? I've been hearing this that and everything about what should be done about a dummy throttle body and the IAC. Apparently the new JRSC kits have a remote mounted IAC located on the firewall? If I'm running a megasquirt to I really even need the dummy throttle body or an IAC at all?

Question 2

The IAC all together, how does this system work with a boosted setup? I understand that it is just a valve that opens or closes depending on engine temperature. From what I can tell the valve is open under a "cold" engine. What happens if I start driving and boost under a cold engine? Will the air just bypass through the IAC and go back through the whole intake system again? I've been reading about systems where they run no IAC at all and just run an air hose from pre intake mani right back to before the SC. Wouldn't this essentially just be a major boost leak?

Question 3

Is an intercooler setup worth it? As a positive displacement charger I'm going to say its safe to assume that the intake charge gets very hot. However, most supercharger setups I'm seeing are running a hotpipe right from the charger into the intake manifold. As an avid track guy should I run an efficient intercooler setup?

Question 4

Is there anyone who knows a site or a place to buy the JRSC mounting brackets for the charger itself? I am planning on making some, but if I can just buy the mount for a decent price I'd rather just do that. The only place I've seen so far is TR Lane.





Coming from an ITB setup I was going to figure this is going to be a walk in the park. Certain things are quite confusing. If you guys can even just answer one question, hopefully there will be enough knowledge that I can get all the questions answered.

Well, I don't know the answer to those questions, but I can tell you the closest thing to advice you will get here is to sell the SC and buy a turbo.

And you clearly haven't read ANYTHING since you somehow missed the fact that there is an entire supercharger section of the forum.

Good luck, noob. You are going to need it for the hell you have just unleashed.

Would it be advisable to just close the thread down as there will be more flaming than actual information being passed on?

As far as the intercooler query, intercoolers become tricky for superchargers due to the increase in volume of air needed at any one time to avoid lag. I've seen people that had to cock their tb slightly open to maintain air flow to keep the intercooler full at all times. Some use bov's. My honest opinion: keep the charge pipe and avoid the headache. Yes, colder air obviously means higher density charge, but on a track that's been driven on continuously, how cold do you think the air is 1 ft above the asphalt?

Air doesn't necessarily have to be cold in order for the intercooler to effectively lower intake air temps. Otherwise there would be no such thing as an intercooler. Say the intake air temps are reaching 40*C (sorry for the Canadian units of measure eh) I'm pretty certain an intercooler would help quite a bit at lowering that even if the ambient air temp is 25*C. Is this correct or am I mistaken?

I do appreciate your reply, and always look for everyone's opinion.

Would a 'high boost pulley' help compensate for an intercooler?

Technically, any difference in ambient temperature from your charge will lower your temps, yes. By all means, if you can make it work, then yes. Cold air is safe air. But the point I was making before was that the headache of getting it to work with a supercharger is not worth the few degrees of temperature drop.

Superchargers only become "positive displacement" during acceleration, which is when the bypass closes. A high boost pulley would not affect the amount of air out of boost, but will offer decent hp gains during boost.

Basically, if you have the mechanical know-how to make an intercooler set-up work. Do it. Speaking to overall safety due to decreased temperature, it can do nothing but help. But it is not as simple as just throwing an intercooler in front of your radiator.
