Junkyard Turbo Muddle

I have been given a turbo from a Astra 1.7 the spec/engine is:

Astra - 68HP Low blow 1.7L D X17DTL 92-98

Would this turbo work on my mx5, what performance gains would there be? I only ask as i have the turbo for free.

Many thanks in advance guys!

zoomin 12-28-2008 07:26 PM

any idea which model turbo it is? Garrett, IHI, Mitsubishi, KKK?

Saml01 12-28-2008 07:27 PM

Its a GT1544.

To small.

martdaman 12-28-2008 07:29 PM

Yes that's right, the turbo does seem on the small side, so there would be no performance gain?

Oh sure there would be, somewhere around 900 - 3000rpm. After that its blowing hot air and most likely will explode if its running off four cylinder.

in for 300,000rpm turbine speed.

NA6C-Guy 12-28-2008 11:51 PM

Jesus, 1544 FTW!!! :giggle: Better luck with a hair dryer plugged into your intake piping probably.

look at the wastegate actuator, its almost as big as the compressor housing, lol.

NA6C-Guy 12-29-2008 12:07 AM

Shit, I bet it wouldnt slide in the inlet. Thats great. Find another and run twins lol. 2 angry hair dryers are better than one. Maybe I will pick one up for my pressure washer or lawn mower.

Saml01 12-29-2008 12:15 AM

^ Someone already did that and made 280whp.

NA6C-Guy 12-29-2008 12:18 AM

Ran 2 1544's on a 5hp Briggs and Stratton? Or did a twin Miata setup in general? Ive seen a twin on youtube. I dont really see the point unloess your just bored and want to show off your fabrication skills to have something unique.

chance91 12-29-2008 12:26 AM

^^^ Well, ask the engineers who did the TT Supra/ TT Rx-7. Or the new Turbodisel F-250, although thats a bit different. Or the variable vane turbos on the AWD Turbo 911.

The idea I would guess is a steady torque curve, but you'd have to figure out how to transition from the small turbo to the large one, or find a way to not over-stress the little guy, I guess.

But all in all = complete waste of time for a diy'er.

twin turbos on a miata, if I remember correctly it was a gorgeous setup too. I don't see the point either, you loose the benefit of a small turbo because its only being spooled by 2 cylinders. But 280hp is 280hp.

NA6C-Guy 12-29-2008 12:33 AM

Damn, that guy did use some small turbos, 1548's. I still would just rather have one 2560 or 2860 to make that 280hp.

martdaman 12-29-2008 12:32 PM

Can i ask how did you find the turbo part number out from the information i gave you just for future reference.

Many Thanks for the advice guys

That would be a great size for my 1275cc Austin Healey. I'm sure you aren't local to me. Do you want to give it a happy home in Florida?

nicacus 12-29-2008 01:09 PM

I've got an IHI rbh5 with a broken shaft laying around... Not much bigger, if you can rebuild it you can have it

For some reason I think it was like 220 on the 15 series then he moved into the small 20 series for 280. <shrug>
