One time I scored on a junkyard a Supra turbo (old version) with front mount intercooler, turbo manifold, injectors, the whole kit for $75.00. Next thing posted on EBAY and sold it for $600.00. Have also found RX-7 Turbo II turbines, those you just change the turbine housing to .48 or .63, a machine shop ports the hot compressor housing and ready to go. Many times I show up to see torn apart Conquest, Supras, Eclipses, it seems as if I am always a few days behind when visiting the junkyard. |
Buick Grand National turbo TB0348
Question - Came across a good deal on a TB0348 turbo. Searched this site but couldn't find too much on info on a manifold for a 1.8 with with 3-bolt turbine flange. Does or can anyone make this manifold or would it be better to sell it & buy a T3/T4?

Best thread necro. I appreciate your use of the search function. It will likely be much easier and better to sell the turbo and buy another one. It is almost never a good idea to build a whole setup around an odd turbo that you got for a steal.

1986-89 GM, Buick Grand National TB0348 Turbo 466748-0004
So, It is a turbo off a grand national? I would say you could probably get some money out of it from those folks. If you want to go through the trouble of custom fabricating a manifold to accommodate that turbo just to tell everyone you have a grand national turbo, sure. But you have a turbo designed in the 80's for a car that displaces double what yours does. Given the fact you could get a new churbo on ebay for $200 that would out perform that and use existing available hardware. Right now, you have a relatively large T3/T4 good for about 350whp. After you spent the $500 on a custom manifold, $300-400 on a custom down pipe, and whatever charge piping you need on an only oil cooled turbo, you will have someone with a MKturbo kit running circles around you for less money. I could run the turbo, as my engine would handle it, and I still wouldn't for several reasons. Namely, I think my $165 2871 churbo would probably work better and wouldn't require any fabrication. I would sell the turbo, then get whatever hotside parts you want to run, then purchase the best turbo your budget allows based on the hotside parts you chose if you want to piece things together. |
Think about turbo technology from Ronald Reagan's first term as president. Then think about it being from a 3.8 liter and you are going to try to spin it with less than half that. Think about how old tech turbos were known for their lag. And think about spending the money to custom build a manifold to fit a turbo that sucks. Then think about spending the money to custom build a downpipe for a turbo that sucks.
I've got a pile of bullshit turbos only marginally better than the one you've got if you want one. I'll send them to you for the price of shipping. But you don't want them. |

It is far from "budget." 250whp would be possible with a budget build, but anything more than that starts requiring cracking the engine open. You may be fine with 250whp, as that is a legitimately fast miata. I can't tell you how many SRT-4s I smoked on stock internals.

Thanks the info, I'll pass them to the grand national folks - I was told they worth was more than I paid. Just trying to see if I could use something I already had versus purchasing whole kit.
