Just turboed 91 miata, curious about BIPES ACU
Here's my set-up:
-91 1.6L Mazda Miata -DSM 14B Mitsubishi Turbo (WG set at 7psi) -No intercooler -DSM diverter valve reciculated to inlet pipe -97 1.8L Miata 265cc Brown top injectors -Vortech 10:1 FMU -FM o2 signal modifier I just finished installing everything a week ago and the car seems to be running just fine. Though I haven't adjusted timing or anything. I haven't been driving the car around because of fear that I may blow my motor with out any tuning or adjusting the timing... I'm curios about purchasing a Bipes ACU and was wondering what would be the best settings for my set-up? |
There are several writeups on bipes acu etc in the diy faq.

I would retard the timing 4* just to be safe. I wouldn't leave the timing at 10 or 12 without any sort of tuning band aids. Greddy tells you to retard 4* with the stock kit do you have a wide-band gauge? boost gauge? i would recommend those things with a piggy back unit
|
i do have a boost gauge, no wide-band though. I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on a piggy-back unit. It's kinda a budget project.. I was planning on retarding the timing to 8*, but the Bipes ACU just caught my attention because it can retard my timing up to 20* depending on how much boost to completely avoid detonation and yet be able to keep my stock timing in order to not lose low-end power.

You don't tune the Bipes depending on boost necessarily.
You live in VA, so you have 93octane, which should let you push up to 7psi non-intercooled with a Bipes. I'd start at 12* base timing and pull 4* starting at 3000rpm, with an extra degree for every 30*F. If you get knock, either pull your base timing back to 11* or 10*, or increase your total timing pull to 6*. In any case, you shouldn't need to run less than 6* advanced at any time with 93octane... it shouldn't knock, especially with the 02clamp. Air filter placement can also be a big deal non-intercooled... getting as cool of an intake charge as you can is basically free power and knock prevention. You really need an EGT gauge to tune a Bipes effectively. |
When I used the bipes with a greddy I used the following settings (92 Octane):
static timing 14* full retard 8* 1* /20C 2500-3800 ( I hit 7psi ~3700) LEDs set to display 2* of timing retard I also had the 1.8 injectors and the FMU that came with the kit. It made 150hp like this. |
okay thank you very much for your help

Sorry I posted in the wrong thread. Lol

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall being told not to purchase a speedy EFI, speeduiono or whatever. It was actually suggested by someone. I was only told how horrible it was once I said I purchased. I was told in the beginning not to buy the bandaids and I get it. If the band aid would have showed up I would have been happy I believe. Got a buddy running the same kit for 10 years with a bipes ACU with absolutely no issues. Thank for all the input from everyone.
