Lets see them over the radiator intercooler setups

I've been looking around for an intercooler and so far over the rad setup seems best however i have no luck with pictures or anything besides V mounts. I want a v mount however i really cant do it at least with the tools and workspace i have now. :vash:

i was looking at the $1100 setup however no pics of that either :vash:

i got ps, ac and all the other extras a miata could have so that digs the hole even deeper :vash:

something i want is an intercooler that can fill the entire mouth of the miata since i want the holders on the sides out of the way instead of block air flow to the radiator or does that not matter much?

too bad "over" doesnt work with the search :(

Ok, I'll bite,
Mine is very simple

Thank you sir, know of any other build threads with this setup on NAs? I assume the NB has to have some noticeable differences.

18psi 11-24-2009 02:30 AM

I've seen a bunch, but forgot who made them. Search around.

N/A's have more room for this specific sort of thing and would be even easier to do.

triple88a 11-24-2009 02:35 AM

Thanks for the thread and the very quick response sir :)

yeha i was looking earlier today at my nb.. i couldnt find a way to route it thats why i am here asking :( So you had to move the rad eh? no other way?

18psi 11-24-2009 02:39 AM

I try not to cut as much as I can. Any other way involved cutting the rad support and hood. Didn't want to do that.

Others have done similar to my setup but without moving the rad back. They just moved it down (VERY easy to do) and then made brackets for the top so the rad is slightly slanted.
That works too.

I wanted my rad to sit straight though, so that required a bit of creativity.

If you don't mind cutting into the rad support and maybe into the hood a little bit (the inside ribs of it) then I THINK you will get away with not moving the rad back. Still will need to move it down though.

triple88a 11-24-2009 02:46 AM

ah gatcha, i'll have to toy around with that then and see how the rad is supported on the bottom and how i can move it down. one thing i'm thinking of is buying a delta fin intercooler.. would you take the chances with ebay intercoolers?

18psi 11-24-2009 02:47 AM

Its so easy to move the lower brackets down. There is literally another mounting place for them lower. Check my thread, there's pictures of that.

As for ebay intecoolers: I think there's nothing wrong with them at all. I was going to use one myself. Ended up switching to the starion last minute cause of better fitment and it being a tube/fin rather than a bar/plate intercooler.

miata2fast 11-24-2009 07:45 AM

That is a very slick look. You have plenty of room for other accessories like electric water pump if you wanted to.

Here is one I did on a 90 NA. Had to drop the rad a bit and make the changes to the sheet metal but thats about all. I liked the looks of the pipes going over the front from each side. Also makes it easier to find which on blows off if it ever happens. I have not driven the car on the street yet as it is still under production.

18psi 11-24-2009 04:50 PM

That looks great. And shows that it IS easier to do this setup to an na than an nb.

Kenny 11-24-2009 05:00 PM

I guess one caution would be that some people here who are racers do not like cutting the sheet metal over the rad as it is likely part of the structure. I will not be racing and likely driving modestly so I am not too worried about it myself. As stated above it is quite easy to lower the rad. I just used a couple of steel brackets and lowered it about 1 inch for the pipes to clear. I used a SAAB intercooler down below and the pipes and connectors are one of those ebay sets. Good luck

From what i can see the part over the rad is only there to hold the headlights, hood and radiator. In other words, nothing that cant be made with a bracket.

So i will need a drop bracket for the anti sway bar on each side, new ties for the radiator.. i can make those out of some flat metal i have. for the hood bracket how strong are these blue joints?

In other words it can be cut by the red line and the green piece can get completely removed if i want it to. One question i got is, how big is the intercooler you ended up using? What is that style called with the top exit pipes? all i get is the sides when i search delta fin :vash:

18psi 11-24-2009 07:04 PM

26x7x2.5 as posted in my thread.

I don't know if you should cut up the support like you say, but I have no hard facts proving my theory.

triple88a 11-24-2009 07:10 PM

oh sorry i must have missed the size of the new intercooler you ended up using.

from the looks of it i'll have to go with something like this and then shred it up like you did and weld it.
2.5" PIPING KIT DIY BLUE 27x7x2.5 INTERCOOLER RS FLANGE:eBay Motors (item 320452651433 end time Nov-29-09 12:18:29 PST)

actually now that i read it again, no i didnt miss it, you never posted the dimensions.

Oh :giggle:
I fail.

Let me go grab them real quick

18psi 11-24-2009 08:25 PM

its 20x8x2.5 :)

And the one you linked will not work IMHO. It is too wide. Unless you relocate the big ass a/c cannister in front of the ac condenser.
