Looking for assistance getting my 1.6 turbo back on the road.
Used a Bell Engineering kit 8 years ago to successfully turbo my 92. Gave me about 3 years of joy before rings and valve stem seals gave up the ghost. Life happened and getting it back on the road took a back seat. After making decent money last year I saved up to have the motor professionally rebuilt by Race Engineering with the goal of around 250whp.
I know I need bigger injectors than what I have. Its been so long since I ordered them for the first build I cant remember the size but I know I was running a 95% duty cycle. That was on a 2871r at 12psi with my passenger eyeing the wideband while updating the MSPNP on his lap. I still haven't decided on manual or electronic boost control for this new build, but assuming I'm going to need 18-20psi to accomplish my goal. Here's what I have right now. 1.6 that should take the power 2871r with equal length manifold (old Bell Engineering design) Walbro fuel pump MSPNP Innovate Wideband Intercooler supplied in kit by Bell Tried understanding the FAQ on injectors but was left with either needing around 380cc or 440cc. Any help would be appreciated thanks. |
FlowForce 640's would be the cheapest good route. The FlowForce 9xx will give you more headroom. ID1050 if you want to never worry about injectors again.
Where in Charleston are you located? |
Thanks for the response! Isn't it a bad idea to run too big of an injector?
I'm up in Moncks Corner. |
Trust Shuiend. All of those specifically mentioned are of sufficient quality, and properly matched by the supplier, to idle well with your ECU. Random large ones... not so much. No reason to go below the 640's.

Pricing out the 640s now.

The usual reply is "$319?? Oh noes, cant afford that, I only budgeted for Ebay rx8 China knockoffs. I gots cats to feed! But seriously the ff 640 are amazing injectors. I'm running them with perfect idle and made 309hp no problemo |
After $4500 on the motor rebuild I sure as shlt don't want to cheap out now.
And I've trained the cats to survive off Girlfriend's tears! |
Stock rods or upgraded rods in the motor? Any upgraded rod will hold well north of 250. With the 640s and a 2871 you can likely safely set your power goal around 270-280 to the wheels.

But how long will the kitty in the 5sp transmission tolerate that? I've drawn the line in the sand at tranny swaps.

I'm up in Moncks Corner. None of those injectors are oversized. Shoot me a pm if you have not already ordered a set of injectors. I may have a spare set of FF laying around that I could let go of. |
If you have mechanical empathy and it's a street car, quite a while from what I have seen.

I have not seen any mention of the differential.
The ring & pinion gears in the 1.6 cars are notoriously weak. At 250 HP, the OP is fairly certain to destroy it. The '94+ cars used a slightly larger differential, which is much more robust. Replacing this should be on the build list for any high-power '90-'93 car. You will also require the axles from a '94+ car, as they do not interchange between the two diff styles. |
