Loud Intake
I need to do something about my intake. There's a very small filter stuck on the turbo (as a temporary measure) and I'm sure it's a restriction. The noise when the turbo spools is also way too loud.
So, I need some kind of CAI, that will hopefully get rid of a little bit of the noise. What can I do? My charge pipe runs across where most people put their cold air boxes so that's out. Let me see if I can go get a decent picture. |
wrap it in some sort of foam like pat did

Restrictive filter? Get a bigger one.
Intake too loud? Grow a pair. :fawk: |

Here's what I've got for space. Not a lot. Please ignore the disgusting engine bay, I'll clean it when it's warmer.

I've got a bigger filter, but it's TOO big so there is nowhere to put it. I need to figure out where I'll put the filter before I can buy the correct sized one but I really don't know where to go with it. That pipe routing seemed like such a great idea when I did it....
As for the noise, I'm hoping that just the longer intake piping will help enough. If not I'll have to talk with Pat about what kind of foam he used or something, though that seems excessive. |
You'll need to move your intake somewhere where it's cooler, get a larger filter, and wrap it up in foam.

High frequency sounds tend to be more linear than low frequency sounds. A pipe will help. A gentle bend in said pipe will help even more.

what size pipe do most of you guys run for intakes?
|
I say reroute that hotside pipe to the way most do it and then put the filter behind the headlight with a simple 90* bend.

Based on some calcs I did recently I would keep the ducting at least 2.5" in dia. And use something with a smooth inner wall. Aeroduct is a good example; that is what I am using for mine. That accordion stuff they sell at the auto parts stores is not such a good idea.
Also you might be able to fit one of these in and duct it to a cooler location Carbon Air Filter The splash guard could help with the noise. What sixshooter said is correct. Plus a duct will tend to suppress frequencies that are above whatever its resonant frequency is. Think of it like a pipe organ. |
