ls coils, dwell times? pencil style compatiblity, etc
Joining the big boy ignition system club finally, purchased 14 ls2 truck coils so a few in there should be working...
I never found much around here through a search on ls2 1 etc coils which is weird because I'm sure I read about it here first, but my best source for info so far has been the mega manual and fm's website. Here Megasquirt Sequencer Coils And here http://www.flyinmiata.com/support/in...ra%20coils.pdf Either way, hottest coils around, but I guess in the last three or for years these have spawned a coil on plug like version, what's called a pencil coil. Has anyone tried these yet? Looks like two or three different sizes are availiable, shortest being from ecotec 4 cylinders. I'm going to get a v6 and 4cyl version if I can.. apparently caddies with v8s in their cars also run em. Sounds like its a coil on the level of the second or third version of this coil, either ls2/truck or ls3 style. People with oem toyota cops swap to gm ls coils, something to think about. Megasquirt MSEXTRA / MS3EFI • LS style pencil coils (View topic) Has anyone given these a test fit yet? As well, I see in the mm they have about 6.0ms recomendation for dwell, has anyone done much with this in a hydra or is that a good number to go with? |
The ecotec ones kind of blow. I mean they're fine for most people, but so is the stock Miata setup.

Well I shouldn't say they are crappy. They work fine even getting up to 30psi and 400something hp in those cars. No one sells an upgrade for them. Never seen them pushed beyond what we do over here with toyota coils. I've just never been impressed by them.

You can buy the GMC terrain coils at rockauto for 40 bucks each. Seems like a decent deal but you would still need connectors. I wonder if they are better than the toyota cops.

Connectors should be cheap. Bet they're delphi of some sort.

Hey leafy, for the record, I'm referring to the coils that look like this:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1343934794 http://www.rockauto.com/getimage/get...5C_Primary.jpg these are the ecotec ones, they look more like COPS, and have been around since early/mid 2000's. I see them on 06 2.4 engines like the cobalt. The terrain ones are more near 08 inception. Looks like 08 equinox. ** correction, actually these first came out on the 04 CTS 3.6. List of vehicles with these coils here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_High_Feature_engine#LY7 However, the version from 2008 onward CTS/STS is Direct Injected, labeled the LTT. Typical DI coils put out around 86mj (compared to LS coils 90-120mj, or toyota cops <50mj) at 120ma secondary current. They need to be stronger in DI applications https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1343934794 Ecotec 4cyl coil above. I would call this kinda a weird COP more than a pencil coil, where the electronics are partially/mostly in the sparkplug well. This doesn't mean much, but it just shows the evolution of the design, much like LS2 coils, while similar to LS1 coils, are far improved, so would you be able to draw a similar conclusion about these guys. I wish I had any sort of hard data on them, but all I can say is if I had to put money on it, they should be quite a bit better than the Toyota cops, and I'm hoping in the range of LS1/LS2 coil power. They use the same connector as the lastest version of GM LS coils, as well. I'm going to try and do more digging if I can. *** More reading. http://delphi.com/manufacturers/auto...nsys/igncoils/ Anyway, Part numbers for the Non-direct injection pencil coils appear to be Delphi D501C, and for Direct Injection versions they seem to be D515c, the latter seems to be from 2008 or so onwards. Another version, D598A looks like its used in Cadillac's Newer V8s as well. I'm going to get ahold of a few of these and see what I can find out. |
Interesting. I am glad you posted the output of the coils. That is very low compared to what I would like to see. I have run 750mj on the street. I am building parts to sequential fire.

Sorry to throw an uninformed question in here but I saw some Ford Coyote engine coils on TV and they were pencil style coils. I am just hoping that Ford decided to use coils of similar power to the GM coils on the engine that is supposed to compete with GM's high output engines.

Powerblock on spike, guilty pleasures...
I am curious to know if anything ever came from this discussion. Anyone tried wiring any of these? |
