Manifold Flange

All you guys who make your own turbo manifolds out of weld els, what do you use for the flange on the engine side? Do you re-use the one from the stock headers, or do you buy one, or do you make one?

Short story: I need an exhaust flange, what's the easiest/cheapest way to get one that doesn't suck?

Anybody know of any stainless ones, or are the choices Mild Steel and Cut Your Own?

TurboTim 08-11-2008 10:47 PM

I used WeirTech on my last 2 manifolds. Very nice flanges. Much cheaper than ETD. I've never tried the JGS. I don't like the round-to-oval machining they do, I prefer to make the weld-el oval with a press instead. But if I didn't have a press then I'd probably run the JGS flange.

And I do not know of a source for stainless head flanges unfortunately. From what I found the general concensus (sp?) from "experts" on the internet was that mild flanges are ok if you use the correct filler wire (type 309). I have not tried it yet; my stainless manifold is done except for the head flange, I am waiting to make up my own mind. My very first manifold used a stainless ETD flange and I had no issues with it at all; they no longer make them.

I may have one of the prototype machinists at my work make a stainless flange, or I may decide to use the Weirtech mild flange and try to find someone I trust to test it.

WeirTech here, too. Good quality and good prices. Get the turbo mount flange there, as well.

I'm about 90% sure they are coming back soon :)

i have them in stainless now too. $90 plus shipping. pm me with your state/zip.

like tim mentioned, there are no issues if you use 309L filler when fusing stainless to mild steel.

And mild steel is what now? $25-ish?

Aaron, how many manifolds have you made using 309L wire? What schedule SS weld ell's? What applications where the manifolds for?

weir 08-13-2008 09:00 AM

tim,
the ms bp and b6t flanges are $22 each. i'm doing a set of headers for a v8 toyota right now, and they are the first i've done with ss flanges. i've sold ms flanges to many many fabricators across the US and they never seem to have any problems. actually, the mild steel flanges have less tendency to warp than stainless. i myself have made probably close to 50 manifolds and almost as many downpipes with ms flanges and 304ss schedule 10 piping without an issue, from bmw's to hondas, to fords and mazdas to bike headers with 16g tubing.

TurboTim 08-13-2008 09:04 AM

Wow ok that's a lot of manifolds. I wasn't doubting you; I know you have done more manifolds using your material and the same rod I have (309L). Thanks :)

Ok, now I'm back where I started. Aaron at Weirtech sent me a stainless flange but canada post lost it and he doesn't have any more in stock.

With any luck, Weirtech will have another soon and I will have it before my next install day, but from talking with him it doesn't look good.

I'm going to talk to ETD but I don't have high hopes on them either.

I just wish my friend weren't so stubborn about using a stainless one. Sounds like the mild steel ones don't have any problems, my friend just refuses to use any mild steel on this project and he's the one doing the welding.

Stein 09-09-2008 10:05 AM

That sucks. Canada post lost mine from wiertech as well a couple of months ago. He was able to ship me a replacemnt with DHL and it got here in one day.
