is this megasquirt 3 ?
 

I am doing the research on megasquirt and planning to get one (it seems like I can get a good support here for megasquirt, dont want to waste time on hydra, etc.)

but I probably should figure out which it is at first. (1? 2? 3?)

as I am understanding, for PNP

MS1: oldest one, cheaper, less function, can be upgraded to be MS2 by dropping a MS2 daughterboard

MS2: can be upgraded to be MS3 by dropping a MS3 daughterboard?

MS3: had never seen (I mean, I found the pictures for MS1&2 as MSPnP, but there is no MSPnP 3)

the difference between 2 and 3 is that 3 can control VVT (I dont have..), and Sequential fuel and spark (is this useful for 96 1.8?)


my question is:
can I buy DIYPnP kit as this link, to build my DIYPnP 2, then someday just buy a MS3 daughterboard and a box so it can be a MS3?

What you describe is how it used to be 5 or 6 years ago.

The Megasquirt landscape has started to become seriously confusing, since there many different ECU boards now available, with different CPU options. What used to be called a "Rev 3" Megasquirt was, in reality, an MS1. Etc.


Long story short: Figure out what you want, and build that thing from the start. Doing "upgrades" from one CPU to another is always hairy, as the optimal wiring differs from one to the next.

The price difference is so small these days that I can't imagine not starting with an MS3 + MS3X (or the plug-n-play equivalent thereof.) All Miatas will benefit right off the bat from full sequential injection, and even if you never plan to run it on a VVT engine, the fact that its the current-gen platform means that all future software updates will treat it preferentially.

MS 1 2 3 is the series that not fit the stock ECU connector and I have to make my own harness

MSPNP 1 2 is the series that fit my stock ECU connector

for the function, is there any difference between MS and MSPNP?

if I am going to buy a MS3, to save some money, I would like to go with DIY

so I should buy:
1, 2 harnesses (for MS3 and MS3X)
2, MegaSquirt-III MS3X Expansion Card
3, MS330-K kit with MapDaddy4 Upgrade (or without MapDaddy4?)
these are totally $703

and the above will be equal to:
1, 2 harnesses (for MS3 and MS3X)
2, MegaSquirt-III EMS System with MS3X Expansion V3.57 - Assembled
totally $817

$114 difference

but for the wire, there is just wires without plug (connector), how can I connect the wire

solder every wire to the mainboard with a stock ECU connector?

if I don't want to mess the mainboard up, should I buy that $79 harness which has plug, so I can make a harness that has plug for MS3 on the one side and stock ECU connector on the other side

you'd solder them to the provided db37 solder cups and attach to the side of the MS.

you said "provided db37 solder cups", but on the link for wire loom, they said "Just like a short run of the MS3X harness, but with no DB37 connector. "

I didn't see any of these links includes db37 solder cup or connector

Skip the jimstim. It wont work for the ms3x inputs, which are like all you use.

you can buyer it at mouser. it's like $12 plus shipping.

So if I wanted to properly bench test this I'd need the jim stim and the jim stim x? I was hoping to verify that I built it right as well as set up and bench test a tinyIOx from the comfort of my desk rather than in a cold garage in vehicle.

Braineack, I would not have imagined that someone could so clearly dispel all of my confusion on how to build a ms3. There were so many benefits to using it, but the pnp was pretty pricey for me at this point; Now I saved some money, and I'll get to learn how to build my ecu. :idea:

Google returned msextra for building an ms3x, and I read through that. Searching here brought up Franks guide, which seems pretty concise. Do you have a recommendation?
