Miata homemade turbo
I have a garret m24 with trim a/r 48. The turbo came off of a 93 300zx. I have done a fair amount of research. Even saw a thread in here about someone else who has the same setup but my question's werent answered in his thread, so please dont flame me. Im buying a new engine to build it all on. My question is. I have the turbo, Im buying the engine. I know i need a custom made flange for the exhaust side of the turbo to get a downpipe for it, other than that im unsure of what else i need besides the i.c piping and the front mount. and few other small stuff. What else has to be custom fabbed to make this setup work on a 1.6?

If you have specific questions, people will be more willing to help you out. If you ask to be spoonfed info that has literally been covered hundreds if not thousands of times, this will be the nicest reply you get. |
What the fuck? I click this link looking to see the worlds first homemade turbocharger only to find out that you simply stole a "garrettmade" turbocharger from a 300zxtt and called it "homemade".
That's bullshit, dude. |
Hmm, should've chosen my words more wisely for you sensitive folk out there, never did i once say i made it, figured the easiest way to explain it would be homemade as making my own setup rather than buying a complete kit. I have read and searched but Im asking specifically for this turbo what I need else besides what I have and already know. Lol go cry about my wrong wording feller

Don't build a car around a turbo you already have. The custom work will drive the price up when you could buy cheaper off the shelf.
You'll quickly loose the money you "saved" using a turbo you already have. Have you looked at maps? Just because someone else used one doesn't make it right. --Alex |
Do you have any specific power goals? You won't get very far with that turbo, it's pretty small.
How are your fabricating skills? You said you needed a outlet flange to mate to a down pipe, are you going to be building the down pipe yourself or are you going to have a off the shelf unit modified? What manifold are you going to be using? Custom or off the shelf? What engine management are you planning to use? Are you capable of building your own to save money? Are you familiar with how to tune a car or know what a car needs to survive under boost? Why a 1.6, is there a reason you want to stay with that engine? What is wrong with the engine you have now? Do you have the necessary drive train to handle the power? 1.8 rear end? New Clutch? We can't help you unless you help us. |

I'm planning on building a house. I go on a house building enthusiast site. Instead of ACTUALLY reading anything or searching, I make a thread that goes like this: "Hi guys I've been doing tons of research on this so please don't flame me. I have a stretch of land, and a huge pile of bricks sitting here. I know that I'll need to put up walls and a roof or something, but WHAT ALL ELSE IS NEEDED TO BUILD A COMPLETE MODERN HOUSE WITH ALL THE AMENITIES" Now tell me, would you honestly take a post like that seriously? yes/no If you answered yes, get the fuck out of here. If no, then there is hope for you yet, and please ask a mod to close this thread and start over;) Oh and welcome:) |

Nobody is butthurt here, but every week the same question comes up from a different noob...I've been lurking here almost 4 years, trust me I know.
Please start by reading this thread and then read it again and again...it'll help you get a clearer start with your DIY project: DIY FAQ Thread...click it!! |
Sorry, but it's too easy. Our point is you have around 10% of a turbo setup. So just because you have it, doesn't mean you have to make the other 90% around it.
If it satisfies your power goals however, then by all means, make the setup. For a good setup, along with your turbo, you'll need: 0. Air/Fuel ratio meter. 1. Manifold to bolt your turbo to. 2. Down pipe to bolt to the turbo and then to the exhaust. 3. Pipe between the turbo outlet and your throttle body, preferably with an intercooler in the middle. 4. Turbos add air, so you'll need to add fuel. We like MegaSquirt, henceforth referred to as MS. Get one. 5. Bigger injectors. 6. Clamp on filter for turbo inlet. After that you only have to tune the MS, and add any optional bits like a boost controller, fuel pump, boost gauge, clutch, stronger differential, stronger transmission, etc, etc. Some of those things might be better to do first, like the clutch and boost gauge, but you can always do a low boost setup and if you're lucky the stock clutch will hold for a bit. As for the list, #0 is not an option, and is the first thing you should do, it can point out issues in your fuel system even when naturally aspirated, such as a clogged fuel filter or failing fuel pump. After that, the list is more or less in order of hardest/importantest to easiest/less important. Although the MS is "easy" (if you buy a pnp unit), it's also essential to running ANY boost, hence me saying "more or less". Any of these items can be researched on this site, so please don't ask us to spoon feed you much more. |
Thanks alot curly
