mk1 link vs. mk2 link
 

is the mk2 link any better than an mk1 link... is it really worth it to buy a mk2 vs an mk1 link???

i just spoke with flyin miata and they told me the differences were that the mk1 doesnt do knock control or boost control.. i told them that i already had a boost controller....then i asked them was worth it to buy and new link vs buying a used mk1 link.. they told me yes spend an extra $900 to buy a new one..
then i called ken at oracle tuning and he told me that i should buy the used mk1 because it was a good deal and i could get a knock sensor seperatly..

I have a MK1 and am pleased with it.A complete set link mk2 ecu cost around 1500dollar...
I bought mine for 600. With the latest chip (fm)you can add Wideband tuning, intake temp, and knock control(for the last one you need a mk2 map sensor.
Easy to tune ecu. Works great.

MK2 has sequential injection and boost control...

Be sure to get the controller (keypad) cable ecu and map sensor (black box with link brand)

Runs fine on my 460cc injectors on 15psi.

The MK2 is an updated design which also supports many nice features such as sequential injection, IAT compensation, knock sensing, boost control, and wide-band O2. Though the benefits of sequential injection may be small, the MK1 can't run it since it doesn't have enough injector drivers. The MK1 also can't do knock sensing due to needing the MK2 MAP sensor with signal conditioning electronics (filters, etc.) and the phono jack for the cable. I've been told some MK1 MAP sensors can be modified to support the knock sensor, but mine was not.

I had a MK1 Link that I recently upgraded (still needs tweaking) to MK2 status using a MK2 MAP sensor, modded board (re: jumpers soldered in to run sensors), Link IAT sensor, and the Bosch knock sensor. (Of note, I had a chip from 2004 that supported the extra sensing features.) I have a MBC, so the boost solenoid is not needed in my case, plus I've heard it's notoriously hard to tune the Link boost control. I found a guy that modded the board for $100, used MK2 MAP sensor was $125 from FM, and IAT and knock sensors were $105 and $92, respectively, both from FM. That puts me at $422 to upgrade to what is essentially a MK2 Link.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a used MK1 Link. MK2s pop up in the Miata.net Classifieds every now and then.

I know its off topic.... but what about considering MS. Its more work.. but will yield all the things desired... for a fraction of the cost.

well if you can get a link for cheap, why not. boost control can be done separately. However, if you are up to the task, megasquirt will do all of it in one, as splitime says. A lot of it comes down to how much you want to be able to control and how much time you are willing to invest for research vs. cost.

get the dsm 450cc injecors or the 460cc rx7...If not supplied.
It can run low and high imp injectors. You only need a resistor/injector on the low imp.

will it be better to get larger injectors or will the dsm 450s be better???

Sorry to get back to the original issue, but how can you figure out if what you have is mk1 or mk2? i bought from ebay a month a go the link board, and I am trying to figure out if this is mk1 or mk2. When did they start to produce the mk2?

MK1s stopped being produced around 1999, IIRC. If you have the ECU installed, key-on then press and hold both EDIT keys on the keypad to display the ECU type and software release code. If not installed, it's a matter of opening up the case.

if you can pick up a Mk1 its worth it. You can make just as much power. Its more of a do you want more bells and whistles if you upgrade to the MkII software for the Mk1. I use to have a Mk1 and made plenty of power

Anyone has a picture of an mk2 link ECU or at least the mk2 MAP sensor so I can compare it to mine?

i bought pitlab's mk1. it is now a mk2. if you have issues with a mk1, it is best to talk to ken hill at oracle tuning, formerly of flyin' miata. he knows it very well, whereas jeremy @ fm knows dick about it. ken hill ftmfw.

personally, i like the upgraded mk1 over the mk2 i had previously. it is easier to install in a 90-93 (with the board mods) and just as good. sequential injection really isn't worth the trouble.

I talked to Ken once. He is a great guy. I think that I will be collecting the missing items such as knock sensor, keypad, new chip, etc. in the next several months and then go link.

By the way, I am sure the question was discussed before, but can you use the link for the 94-97 and/or the various sensors from this unit for a 91 miata?
