Default Questions on Anti Surge?...

So no matter where I look there is never a definitive answer about boost build lag with anti surge turbos.

Also, what exactly is surge? From my understanding: The turbo spools too fast causing the (already turbulent) air coming into it to become too turbulent and can cause the turbo to have issues pulling air in.

surge it litterally when the turbo is trying to push more air in your motor than is possible.

it's happening on the left hand side of the compressor map, so you're moving tons of air at low VE/RPM areas of the motor. So instead of the motor ingesting the air and making power, the boost acutally builds up and starts to cause the turbo to surge as the boost pushes back on the wheel and forces back out through the intake.

it's not about the turbo spooling too fast, it's about too large a turbo on too small a motor. It's a CFM issue, not a PR issue.

Okay, but I have heard that you select your turbo by your hp/cfm not your engine size.

Everything matters. You want 600HP on a 1.6L, it might surge when you try to pump 400cfm into something that can only digest 200cfm.

Not really, plus I am buying a 1.8. Even then, 250hp sounds nice. Last question Braineack, what, if anything, have you heard about a turbo company called kinugawa?

Would this classify an anti-surge (or ported) compressor as a "bandaid" or does it actually move the surge line left some?

GT2560R or similar sized turbo. Surge should be a non-issue at those power goals.

It's not a bandaid.

Yes it moves the line to the left at the cost of ultimate flow capability of the turbo. We are talking like 10-50hp for big 800hp turbos so on a small turbo it won't matter.

On my "biggest turbo ever on a miata" I have an antisurge housing and do not get surge. That means you prob will not have to worry about it.

Cool, thanks for the clarification. I figured there was some sort of compromise involved but doesn't sound like a big deal at all.
