MSPNP vs. band-aides

So I bought my car w/ the turbo on it, EMB in the trunk w/ boost sensor, not connected, and wideband in the exhaust. The car wouldn't start, but I've since corrected that. I didn't go into this w/ the intentions of becomming a Miata expert, or even a tuning expert. I just thought, oh, a turbo in a little Miata, SWEET! So there, I'm a newb... but I've been reading, I promise!

So... in pricing out an EMB and wideband, you're almost at the expense of a MegaSquirt, add a rising rate FPR and you're there.

My question:

Why do so many people run band-aides vs. going MegaSquirt?

I'm wanting to finish my build, the easiest and cheapest way possible. At this point I think I'm at a crossroads between buying a MS-PNP and starting over, and finishing w/ the EMB and adding Bipes + FMU + o2 clamp ($450 if I bought all new parts)

I could probably sell my EMB and 305's to equal out the expense of buying a MegaSquirt vs. buying the rest of the band-aides I need.

I have no idea if I ever plan on building the bottom end, and I think 10-12psi would be my limit for now. I'm trying to buy a house, and won't have much money/time for playing w/ cars here soon.

What would you do? Why?

Thanks!

Easy solution.

The wideband is a NECESSARY tool, and can be used with the MS, whether you go plug-n-play, homegrown, or just order one from Braineack(my personal route).

Leave the WBO2, sell the band aids, spend $430 for MS, built shipped to your door, enjoy.

Or build your own for half the price!

ms makes the process very simple and its worth every cent. I wouldn't consider going turbo without stand alone. The benefits are awesome.

Sell everything but the wideband and buy a Megasquirt from Brainiack or build your own.

Honestly, for people who aren't looking to make that much power and have a very basic setup....that's where bandaids come in.

gospeed81 04-07-2009 02:45 PM

I don't plan on getting much over 200whp, and I still LOVE having MS.

It costs as much (less if you build it) than decent band-aids, and you actually know what your motor is doing. Having feedback is great, and being able to do something with that feedback is better.

I run datalogs daily, just because I get a kick out of it.

Can't wait to turbo it, and know that with MS, it's going to take me all of a 1/2 hour to get it daily drive-able.

Honestly, for me, it will probably be like my srt. When I first got it, I used a bunch of cheap/bandaid parts but after getting too advanced for that setup...I finally invested in a real management system.

Drivability is the magic. A trip around the block on my tune and you'll never consider piggy-back action again.

Curious what you did there, I don't plan on modding my SRT's engine but I've seen a few SRT owners using MS.

Band-Aids vs MSPNP = Mechanical tuning vs Fully Computerized

I'm not for/against either solution, because I have no real experience to base an opinion off of.... but I'm saying, a MS, even new is $700. All the neccessary band-aides surpass that price, and that's if you buy cheaper option band-aides.

FMU - $180
BIPES - $200
EMB - $380
o2 clamp - $80
Shipping? $60

Total $900

So if I go MS, all I need is, MS. Not to mention I can then put some real injectors in there.

And an EMS will grow with you when you decide your car feels slow.

Project84 04-07-2009 04:10 PM

What about fueling? Will I still need the FMU?

I'm reading up on MS-PNP as I type this...

you could, but the money is better spent on huge injectors.

This is the best part. You can decide to run whatever injectors you want.

AND you can install MS on your stock injectors, get used to tuning, then swap in some biggies and just change a few numbers/take a few datalogs and keep going.

How can you get a base map on MSPNP going? I'm currently shopping for an NA to do the whole routine with currently at m.net
