Mt.net opinions ;)
So miata turbo buddies, I have a question.
I have a series 5 from BEGI. The only difference is my WG is gated to the atmosphere. Its not married back into the DP Anyway, Most of you know I blew my engine apart. I am really tempted to go with a tubular type turbo mani. ETD or absurd flow. Something like those. I know I would need a new DP, but I want a 3" anyway. So do you folks here think that is worth while? What do you think I could get$$ for my S5 mani and DP? Thanks everyone.. |
"dibs" on manifold if you sell it.
EDIT: And absurdflow all the way if you do get a different manifold. And I could see a wastegate port coming off of it right where it turns down into the turbo. If you decide to sell that manifold, let me know. I'll have to sell this T2 based FM cast manifold. |
Also interested in the S5 manifold if pat doesn't buy it.
|
Why are you thinking of a new manifold?
Read that, what does your current set up not do that you wish it did? |
In the brutally rough sport of ******** i suggest keeping the S5 manifold, its more bullet proof than the tubular S4. Doesn't require any bracing and it's already paid for.

I agree about the abuse it takes, but I am looking for quicker spool and all around better performance.
I thought something that is tubular would do that. My 1 concern was it breaking though. As I do beat the hell out of the car :) Thanks for the input though. It sounds like a tubular may not be tough enough.. |
A tubular isn't going to improve your spool that much. Your huge piece of junk t3/t4 is why you're dealing with slow spool.
If you want more spool run a .48 turbine housing. I'm seeing full boost with my S5 manifold with the Tial reintroduced to the downpipe and 3" exhaust by 3200 rpm at 13 psi in 4th gear. That's fast enough for me. |
So does this mean that Absurdflow's are in production?
There are some "new" photos on the ShoreMotorsports website about a 3" exhaust for an MSM... but if he's making Absurdflow's with a matching DP/Exhaust that is shipable...??? |

That's fast enough for me. I was running a T3 from the 2.3L firebird. So it had a .48 on it. I think my lower CR was hurting spool a bit too. Also, when I am saying spool, I mean I need ftlbs ASAP. 14psi by 3200 sounds good to me too. I was hitting that around 3600 with the smaller turbo. With that big shit box it was more like 4500, but man it was a rocket LOL!!! Just not cool when I needed it 1000rpm ago.. What T3 exactly do you have? Thanks everyone |
Why not run a 25 shot in the low rpm range?
|
Just a basic a T3 60 trim with the .48 turbine housing, stage 1.
|
I say get an aburdflow manifold and a good turbo, but not a .48 A/R. Get at least a .63 if this is a track car. Make up for spool with a badass manifold/exhaust.
|
The key to spool is headwork.
With the built block, headwork can also open up a greater usable RPM range. |
Thanks for all the feed back guys..
cjernigan- That is the turbo I had. Sounds like maybe my lower CR was hurting my spool?? OK, so head work, where can i find exactly what to do to my head to have it spool faster and have a more usable RPM range?? Seriosly, i mean for the Miata. My machinist rocks and has a great brag book, but he isnt a Miata guy. He can do anything I ask though.. So what should I do on my 99 head?? I will have better valve springs and i am looking into lighter valves, not bigger. |
I think you need to go with a straight up t3 60 (or super60) too. That's gonna put your powerband where you want it. You could build it- I just picked up and entire 60 trim cold side for $100 - housing, wheel, and the OE pipes. If you find yourself wanting more top end then you still have the option to mess with hot side- larger AR and/or stage.
|
I'd imagine the problem you're running into is at the start of a long sweeper you have great power but by the end the rpms are dropping out of your usable rpm range, and you no longer have the torque to keep the tires spinning. Right?
I had the same issue with the s13 I used to drive with the gt2871r and .86 housing. I got around it by doing ALOT of clutch slipping, and left foot breaking, often at the same time. But if I had the budget I would have just stuck a .48 housing on it, lower the final drive ratio, raise the revlimiter, then if that didn't work well enoughI'd hit it with a 25 shot on the low end. How agressive is your timing? Are you running race gas? |
Timing was there to help with spool. I was running 100 oct.
I am fine through the sweepers. It had enough all the way through. I could do a 4th gear all the way through at El Toro. It was sick. I really think with the 9:1 CR and the head cleaned up I will spool better than I was. Seriously though, I was just about 500 rpm too late coming on with the powerband I had. I had a super 60 with a .48 hot side. It was pretty legit. I am pretty sure it was basically a super 60. It was the turbo off the ford turbo 2.3L.. Thanks everyone.. |
