mxv's 1.8 manifold and downpipe for my miata

Well I got this in the mail a couple weeks ago and wasn't to happy with the end result. We talked and I said fine I'll try and make it work as I thought it would be ok, turns out I was wrong. The welder I had enlisted to fix/finish the set-up just told me he would rather make me a new one from scratch than put his name into this piece of work.:eek4: Thing is I'm 700bux into it and really I'm throwing my money away now, so take this example as a grain of salt but I sadly would not let him weld anything else for me. I would also like to add that up here (Alberta) it seems we have higher standards than the rest of the world when it comes to welding so maybe I was expecting to much from him...

I will say that he always answered my questions and responded quickly and honestly and went out of his way to make this for me, but had I known I would end up with a paperweight I would have gladly liked to of known that he couldn't get it done, instead of slapping it together alittle half-assed and calling it good to go.

Half the pics are from my camera and the others from my friends, he is an oilfield welding inspector, he wasn't remotely satisfied with the welds either, nor was he surprised.

Things I found very readily that are sub-par/wrong:

-Runners are not joined straight
-runners are flared outward from heat
-excessive slag and as my 10th grade welding teacher called it "bird shit" welds
-lack of penetration
-filler welds from burn throughs
-down pipe was bent using most likely a big hammer to fit flange instead of heated up and bent
-flanges aren't true
-down pipe flange bolt hole was constructed but not strong enough to be used.

ICK!!! what the fuck is that....Manifold gone wrong...how much did you put into making that? :)

*caresses BEGi manifold*

Glad I opted out on that one.

Philip 08-31-2006 02:51 PM

that is the worst piece of crap I've ever seen.

dc2696 08-31-2006 02:57 PM

Ya I'll prolly opt out of having this thing touch my car, sadly I spent about 700 on it so far...

RicanmiataRacer 08-31-2006 06:36 PM

A t25 flange works with a t28 turbo....Get a bell manifold and you'll be ok !

Well I have to do something with this thing ya know, I put alot of money into it so just throw it away...Maybe I'll get it fixed and try and sell it to recover some costs and get another built. I'm talking right now with my welder about my options. I would love to send this back to Ari and get a refund...

RicanmiataRacer 08-31-2006 06:48 PM

If not you can always open a lawsuit...you can sue anyone for anything these days lol, only if you are tha sinical about money lmfao ;)

jayc72 08-31-2006 06:50 PM

Sell the YOUR turbo and buy the turbo, manifold and DP from the link I posted. Then try to recoup the cost by selling you gear.

I would demand a refund and pick up a BEGi mani. They are rock solid and you could probably get both dp and mani for about what you've already paid.

Sorry to hear it dc2696. :sadwavey:

Ouch.

mxv 09-01-2006 10:18 AM

offering to buy it back, sorry you are so unhappy but i have served many happy customers locally, it was bad cercumstances with you having an odd flange type and a 1.8, and finding this out rather late, i can do alot better and i guess ill have to do it again when i build my setup. never had a local guys crack in 2 years. my first one crack repeatedly and after that i have had no probs. you are terribly picky of a guy that hasnt been doing for 2 years. and that was 700 canadian man and i did other things for you so dont make it sound like it was a crazy amount of money either...

mxv 09-01-2006 10:29 AM

and heres a shot of the inside of one of mine...

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/DSCF0089.jpg

the sugar and that fact that you can see weld coming thru shows its full penetration. i even left on a cap to make sure the weld was stronger than the runner.

RicanmiataRacer 09-01-2006 10:35 AM

Oh Wow I did'nt know It was one of our own who made these pieces ,I thought it was from an outside source...Well Since he's offering to buy it back, I see that as honorable, most deadbeats out there will give you so much damn hassle to get one cent back from them. that includes mechanics that Are overpriced for the shitty work they do.

mxv 09-01-2006 10:56 AM

nah dont say dead beat, we try to communicate daily and on the phone. i think there was a misscommunication that he thought i was a pro. hes a nice guy and i dont mean to screw him, what he has will work fine but its not perfect. if i was accually making some good money off of him itd probly come out better. but like i said i was doing other things for him and shipping to canada ownes me and thats also candadien money.

Braineack 09-01-2006 11:01 AM

They only thing that really looks bad to me is the funky runners.

RicanmiataRacer 09-01-2006 11:05 AM

What is canadian money worth in the us anyway ?
