I was going to use RTV to make sure it was all sealed but i ended up using steel epoxy instead, works much better and dries faster. Dont think Im going to seal the cap, use that to pour out whatever it collects but it should seal on its own anyways...
Would have been 10x better if the container was for KY Jelly.
Shoulda made one out of PVC pipe, woulda looked less ghetto.
Good temp use catch can. The plastic should hold up to the engine bay temps. Hard to say though. At least you'll be able to see how much oil it's catching easily. Wait for a nice can to come on sale in the meantime, something is bound to come up.
funny ,i just worked the PBS this morning in my lab class. haha. nice mod. I had one made out of PVC pipe for my other car, but i gave it to my friend.
yeah im going to try and find a spot far away from the heat, maybe near the windshield washer tank, to keep it from melting away to nothing.
i should paint it, but its going to look so awesome along with the DIY fuel rail and other random ghetto bits i have |
hmmmm on second thought i might use the Monster energy drink can right next to me
I always thought a martini shaker would make a good catch can.
aluminum water bottle or an awesome hip flask would be so much neater. but that would double the cost. maybe triple.
other "found" items include: a/c drier can, power steering reservoir, extra small fire extinguisher...
1 1/4" PVC pipe, 2 fittings, 1 radiator drain petcock, Chore Boy scrubber as internal filter media, total cost well under $10 each.
This thread is inspiring. I've been roaming around Lowes looking for a suitable container for my catch can...

I'm going to make one out of a Vagisil or FDS tube.
lots of empty cans laying around from the turbo decisions?
I've always wanted to use a moisture filter for an air compressor. Some kinds have a drain valve on the bottom and the top unscrews so you can remove the filter. Perfect small catch can. Looks professional too.
The moisture filter won't work very well, been there. It will still allow too much oil to pass through to the intake.
The 1 1/4" PVC pipe method is compact and very effective if you insert some kind of heat resistant media inside to catch the oil mist. I installed a fuel filter between the catch can and intake to see how effective things are, and the water separator didn't work, but the DIY can I made worked very well. |
i think ill just paint my bottle black and call it a day.
