My attempt at DIY exhaust

Below are pictures of the downpipe and exhaust me and a friend built. We spent a good day and a half fabbing everything. All cuts were made by hand with a hacksaw (sucked big time) and the welds were made with a rented 110v mig welder.

I think it came out really nice minus the goofy bit in the downpipe. The downpipe starts out 2.5" and then transitions to 3" before the flex pipe. The rest of the exhaust is 3". The down pipe is mild steel, resonater is stainless and the rest is alumized.

Everything fits great, I'll take more pictures when I have everything finished and mounted up. The lowest part of the exhaust has about 3.25" ground clearance, hopefully that's enough...

No making fun of my welds, it was basically my first time.

Is that 2.75 stepped up to 3.0" pipe? I'm not gonna knock your welds. looks a hell of alot better than the DP that came on my car and it was supposedly done by a professional. I probably would have used one more flange back at the rear axle, though not necessary. Looking good man.

Oops, excuse me rushing ahead, i get excited when people say they finished their exhaust.

looks good to me :)

I think it looks awesome for a first time DIY exhaust. Badass man. Good job!

boostinsteve 03-14-2007 08:39 PM

Those welds actually look pretty good for a 1st timer. I used to work as welder in a hardfacing company in Washington state, and my welds did not look that good until I got a little experience. Once you get the hang of welding, the welds start coming out a lot better each time you weld. Good job.

I like it! Total cost?

SloS13 03-14-2007 08:51 PM

I would have had 1 more pair of flanges too but it looks great good job :)

That's a very nice DIY system. You should be proud.

Makes me want to man up and try it myself.

That's hard to say, I stopped keeping track and I have tons of pipe left over (probably enough to make a whole other exhaust). I think it could be done for less than $200 if you already have a welder or could borrow one for free. The flex pipe, muffler and resonator were $100, that's a big chunk of the cost.

It installs and un-installs easy enough as is. Another set of flanges probably wouldn't hurt though.

miatamania 03-14-2007 09:13 PM

for the first time, I have to say that looks pretty damn good.

PaKMaN 03-14-2007 09:15 PM

Nice the welds aren't that bad, they'll hold. I would suggest 1 more flange right before the the 90 degree turn to the muffler. That way you could have a 3 piece muffler instead of 2 as it will make it alot easier to remove in the future. Also you should have put a bung hole on the DP for a wideband in the future.

cueball1 03-14-2007 09:17 PM

Come on, that wouldn't look bad for a 2nd or 3rd time. Nice work rook!

Mechazawa 03-14-2007 09:47 PM

Looks good, I think thats a "turbo" muffler, not totally ideal, but then it should have a longer life that a straight up absorption type. Let us know how it sounds!

blue89turbo 03-14-2007 10:07 PM

Looks very nice, you said you have enough to make another one eh?

Yes please... :)

The resonator came with a bung already, you can't see it in the pics. I already have a plx m-300, wouldn't leave home without it.

I meant to buy an absorption type but got this one on accident. I'll probably change it out later.

that muffler deserves some credit for keeping the project cheap - right? ;)

Braineack 03-15-2007 09:15 AM

budget about 800 for the welder and gas. lincoln has a new 110V mig out with a cart for not too much.
