Default My DIY thread

Alright, since every else has one, I'll just make one to document, ask, and get pissed off in.

Car is a 1990, 118k miles. Looking to build a quick spooling, 7-9 psi car to DD and autocross with. Looking to spend under 2 grand over the next year and have the car up and running over the next year.

From reading everybodys post...builds, and reading about FM and BEGI

*UPDATED*
The Plan:
T25 turbo
BEGI Mild steel Manifold and DP
Bipes (some kind of ACU)
RX-7 AFM
2001 1.8 injectors
BEGI FPR
Walbro 190lph hp fuel pump
24x6x3 IC
Bosch BOV w/ check valve
Custom piping
Use my 2.5" catback and test pipe.
New Suspension yay!
Rear End....later
ACT stg 1 Clutch
All Lines

Bunch more random stuff is needed. If I don't have it...I'm looking for it.

I have:
Intercooler
Exhaust
Rollbar
RX-7 AFM
2001 1.8 Injectors
Konis/FM/FCM
SR20 - T25

Coming:
16x7 Rota C8s
Bosch BOV

Need:
Bipes
Downpipe/Manifold
FPR
Lines
Clutch

Might want to consider a T3 and get fallin blades BEGi manifold and DP for sale in the classifides. You want the RX-7 AFM with the B on it.

w/ a b...? I don't get it. It needs a be a series 4, n/a RX-7 AFM...whats w/ the b?

I thought about a t3, but I thought it may be a bit large for the 1.6?

you might as well step it up with the engine management and get a emanage blue along with the boomslang main, injecter, and ignition plug and play harnesses, look on ebay you can get a really good deal for the em blue, Also It looks as if Im not going to be able to complete my deal with the guy selling the em blue with injecter and main harness and support tool for 300, I had my car broken into late saterday night...sTole my pre-turbo-install and guages,radio,300 dollers in rent money ...I hate freakin florida , that was about 150 bucks in guages too, and my new cd player i bought like 3 months ago.....anyways if you'd be intreasted in the offer I got i can give you the guys email

Mazda AFMs have letters on them. The oem miata AFM has a big S, the correct RX7 AFM has a B. It makes it easier to find. But yes you want the IV N/A.

I'm quite happy with my T3 super 60, makes great power and spools fairly quickly. But yes a t25 would most liekly be faster.

Rican:

over my head a bit, what advantage will that give me, I'm new to electronics, its my weak spot with cars. I've got my massive turbo for sale and some guy might buy it, if I can sell it I'd love look into that.

Oh...ok ok, I see what your saying, thanks for clarifying. I've got a friend of mine who has a lot of factory RX-7 parts laying around so hopefully he will have one. . B...I'll make sure to remember that... thanks.

If the parts are for a 1.6 that would be an awesome deal on his parts...his post doesn't say.

the emanage allows you to have control over fuel and ignition, this alows you to run larger injecters, and alows control of other things, its alot more tuanable than a fmu unit,

Hmmm... all of that looks vaguely familiar....
Don't forget that not all T25's are the same... as long as you've done the research on the different flanges, you should be set. A T3 would be fine (giving up almost nothing to a T25) and there seems to be more of them out there and you don't have to worry about the flange crap, all T3's are the same (I think). And there's already that one for sale in the classifieds.

Don't forget the other major parts of the build:
Manual Boost Controller. This is the one I bought:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Voodo...26141865QQrdZ1

Oil Water/Oil Feed Lines: You can go crazy and spend $200 for 4 lines, or do what I did and go rubber for everything but the oil feed: https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/at...0&d=1157580811

DON'T FORGET A CLUTCH!!! The stock clutch will last the length of the driveway with 8psi. I bought a Spec StageII that will be installed along with the turbo. I got it here (cheapest place I could find) http://www.jdsperformance.com/spec.a...iata&fcmd=cars $310shipped. Just do a search for "clutch" to review the discussions that have been had at length on "Which clutch should I get."

As for suspension, guys are always selling stuff at M.net classifieds.
Shocks: KYB AGX
Sways: Racing Beat
Springs: ask yourself why? There are a lot of drawbacks... I'd do them as the last step of your suspension setup.
http://www.miata.net/cgi-bin/isc/cla...revaction=show
Wheels/Tires: 15" is big enough, tires according to your driving style
Chassis Stiffening: http://www.flyinmiata.com/index.php?...umber=13-69920

and last but not least: A ROLL BAR!

to qoute the princess bride, (lol) "Why didn't you mention that among our assets!"

going back to edit: but here's cliff notes:

I already have a Hardcore M2 Sport Bar, which would suffice.

I'm picking up a...max-5 stage 3 clutch and fidanza flywheel off a friend of mine. ( I believe its a modified ACT clutch made to feel like stock pedal feel...great clutch, no longer for sale as of last month from the company).
He can't use it for his auto-x class and it only has about 5k miles on it.

As far as suspension I was looking at running either bilstien or konis, it depends on how much money I can find w/ FM springs...AGXs are my next choice. FCM mount/bumpstops too.

I have a 99 front sway, its a ton larger than factory, RB adjustable endlinks, when the new shocks go on, the rear bar might come out.

I WANT those new 15x8s that emilio on miata.net will be selling...but yea. Factory 14s w/ 195 hankooks right now.

I need to look into MBC and the lines, those are where I need to focus on once I get everything settled on whats going on..

ALSO, I'm not sure if I need an engine rebuild before I do this...I'm burning NO oil right now, but shes at 120k.

hmmm, the one you were going to buy, how hard is it to setup or is it miata specific? Would it be easier to tune b/c thats my major thing..>I'm dumb about this stuff.

the tuning is not hard just move the cog and see how it runs. i suspect kunjfu jesus's is set up to run stock injectors. but this shoud be no problem as it is only a couple clicks away to run something bigger btw i am running 5 clicks stiffer on my 310's as for wheels the einke rpf1's 9.5 lbs from goodwin racing have been very good to me as well as the 225-50r15 bfg gforce sports just throwing it out there.

I've got 136k miles on mine. I did some research and based on projected longevity with those miles and "currently" having good compression, I expect to get around 40k-50k miles at 8-9psi. A used low mile short block is only $500. But I'll go Link in a couple years when the engine finally goes. I'd say that if you've got the extra cash, access to a cheap longblock, and the time/resources to make the change, then flip a coin. Heads:make change... tails:make change in a couple years.

It looks like you've got the rest of the bases covered. Did you see the spreadsheet I linked in my DIY thread. I've updated it as I've gone along and so far I'm right at $1700. That's just for the turbo stuff and doesn't include the clutch. I'll also need to budget in an extra $200 or so for tuning. IT ALL ADDS UP! Little things like zip-ties and various tubes of goo are the things I didn't expect.

A compression check is a quick way to see what kind of shape the engine is in. You're just looking for minimal disparity between cylinders with a respectable compression reading. I think minimum spec in the book for a 1.6 is 145 or os... and if you're that low, boost will surely push oil past the rings. Not saying it won't run and be quick though. - rob

What size T25 is this? Whats the compressor and turbine trim and a/r's ? I'm sorry....but when people just go "I want a T25 for a fast spooling turbo" that doesnt tell me anything because if you have a larger T25 you could concievably find a T3 that would spool faster than the largest T25 and so on.

edit : Ok, so I see you havent picked up a turbo yet. If I was you and wanted fast spool I would just go with a T3 60 trim w/ a .48 a/r turbine and .60a/r compressor cover. It would see 10psi @ about 3400-3500rpm and hold power all the way to redline ( something the T25 wouldnt do most likely)

Andy:
I was looking at putting a t25 from a ca18det or an sr20det, a friend of mine will be swapping either into his 240 in the next couple of weeks and will be upgrading to some t28 turbo...I'm not sure of the exact one. And he said he'll basically give me the t25 for cheap.

Are their GOOD manifolds for a t3 on the 1.6? I've seen a lot of the 1.8 engines but I can't remember seeing anything for a 1.6

BEGi, JGStools, ETD Racing, to name a few.

For the price Fallin Blade is letting his brand new BEGi manifold and DP for, I wouldn't pass it up. You can't beat something built by Corky Bell himself.
