My DIY turbo setup.

Its just starting so its very basic, seeing how cheap i can do it. More for fun than anything.

Got this 14g for free, Needs a rebuild but rebuild kits are cheap. It should spool super quick, and only gonna run 4-6psi. I may need a new actuator.

very similar to my setup. 14b and a manifold made from a stock flange. I've got ~20k on mine. No problems. Hope you ahve the same luck :)

Great start. I'm all about cheap!

small bit of progress, im not great at welding yet and all i have is a Stick welder. Im gonna have my buddy finish it with a mig or try and borrow someone locals.

Once the cyl 2-3 are welded ill figure out a way to cut out the center, then weld it to the flange.

nice

you should trash the 2 remaining pipe they won't be long enough. If you want to do something good, you should take a pipe (something like, 12" long), pierce right in the middle (of the 12") with a Holesaw matching with the diameter of your "pipe bow" and then cut that in half, in the center of the hole you've made. Then you cut them to the length you need.

+1 to Dark Wanderer's comment. It's gonna be pretty much impossible to weld up the way the fitment (if you can call that fitment) is now. Nothing wrong with a DIY setup. But you'll have to do a little better if you want it to last and not crack. As far as welding goes, you're too cold and not getting any penetration. If you're new to welding, get a book or two on welding and read up. I've got a stick welder too and I'm self taught. What electrodes are you using? And what amperage? Also grinding those spots before welding will help too. And grinding between welds helps too. There's a lot you can do while learning to get good results sooner.

Thanks for the tips! But i passed it on to my buddy who has more tools to do it alot better, He will be making new pieces for cyl 2-3. He will also be welding it all up with a nice mig.

I need to get some scrap stock to practice on. But for now i will let my buddy weld it up for me.

He has it right now and i think hes actaully working on it as i type but not sure. I will post pictures when i get it back.

awesome job i love diy manifolds and i agree its GREAT to have friends with turbos:)

Isn't that turbo a DSM T25 and not a 14b? Make sure you get the correct rebuild kit

good eye. didnt even notice that. That's a t-too small. 14b is pushing "too small", a DSM t25 is definitely too small.

I've run both on custom setups. The 14b acts way bigger than the t25. T25 will run out of breath.

92Miata 12-04-2008 06:24 PM

Its from a 2nd gen eclipse auto = 14b

Im still not sure wich kit to get.

jdmcwestevo 12-14-2008 06:12 AM

correction thats a 14G a 14B is a turbo from the twin turbo vr4's 14G is a DSM eclipse/talon turbo 14B is the VR4 twin turbo. just chiming in

gospeed81 12-14-2008 09:13 AM

DIY guys are my heroes. I'm about to start one after christmas. Budget will be directly determined by gifts, and starting parts determined by what I can sneak onto santa's list.

thats what i thought before but had 3-4 people tell me it was a 14b not a 14g.

skidude 12-14-2008 06:23 PM

What are the markings? I have a 14b (or so I thought) on my '94. Came from an early '90s dsm, I think the auction said.

92Miata 12-14-2008 06:32 PM

It doesnt say 14b 14g anything like that on it... its a garret for sure.
