Default Help and opinons,please :)

Hello everyone I need some help deciding on what to do, I have a 1994 Mazda Miata and want to go Turbo or S/C but I also want to drive my car to Cali, Vegas, etc... and pretty much be reliable and not have to mess with the internals and have my car breaking down or messing up, Right now my motor has 120, XXX miles I know there are some people that go turbo or s/c and just run 5-7 psi with high mileage motors but I was wondering what the life time of the motor would be if I was to go turbo or s/c and run 5-7psi as a daily and track car.

I cant decide on getting a turbo set up or s/c set up for my 94 1.8 or waiting and getting a 99+ NB motor "low mileage" and then just getting a turbo kit or building one for that motor. If I was to get a turbo set up for my 1994 motor and say I blew my motor what would I have to change to make it useable for a 1999+ NB motor? If I was to go with the 99+ motor on my 1994 miata body would I have to do and drilling or rewiring or any mods? I’m sorry if these are stupid questions, but im sure we all where not born knowing everything, so please help me decide and give me some feedback, thank you, and have a nice day.

just throw a turbo or super on there at less than 10psi with good tunning you shouldnt have any issues DIY turbos make good power and are easy but take abit of research they are all as reliable as your tunning. Stock motors are good for 300 or so whp before you might consider internals. 99 motor is a direct swap or you can just take the betterflowing head and swap it, save some coin doing that. If you like SC FFS is the one i would buy they seem to have the best product todate if DIY turrbo is over your head and you have money go with BEGI, or FM (if you have real money). I hope this helps

you're fine with the 94 motor.

turbo cars can be reliable if you use good parts and good engine management. Mine has been on the track and driven cross country without letting me down. just make sure you spend a lot of time doing the following things:

1. use the best parts for critical components.
That means sourcing good turbo nuts, high quality oil feed / drain line parts, things like that that could cause massive failures or leave you stranded. You could argue that engine management is in this category.

2. spend time to get your car sorted before expecting reliability.
dont expect to put a turbo on within 3 months of driving anywhere you need reliability. in those 3 months you learn which bolts come loose, what parts dont fit, and just generally how the car likes having boost. if you sort this stuff out properly, it wont come back to bother you later.

3. keep a few hundred dollars in your pocket for those 3 months.

Hit up ebay for most of your needs and There will be less impact on your wallet, beware of counterfit bullshit....Oh don't skimp on engine management, if you are the diy type MS( megasquirt) Is a full stand-alone unit but involves alot of home-work but theres alot of support from miata owners who've done it, or just go wirth a greddy e-manage,boomslang harness and you'll be fine, you can retard timing as well as control fuel 7-8 psi you can run an adjustable fmu And a Ic, egi makes great manifolds, stick with the 1.8 and you'll be more than fine, T3 manifolds are good and there are plenty of options when choosing your turbo, t25 manifolds have mant opts as well, but its all in your taste, let your motor breath a 2.5 exhaust will help a turbo spool a lil sooner, a Clutch is recomended after 8-9 psi...ummmmm oh RESERCH RESERCH RESERCH!

Gustavo,
I believe I have talked to you on MySpace a time or two. I would just keep your 94' Motor and put together a nice turbo kit for it. Let me know if I can be of any assistance helping you put together a kit.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all your guys help and knowledge, So if I was to go with a turbo set up for my 94 and it blows for any reason or just starts acting up could I swap my turbo manifold and turbo set up to the 99-2003 NB motor?, or would I have to get a new manifold and change some piping?

I know its really hard to say how much a DIY turbo set up would be because it just depends on where you look and if you get lucky on some hook ups,but around how much would I be looking at for a DIY turbo kit” all that’s required and needed to run smooth"? If i go turbo i want to do it right and do everything i can and not have to pull things off month after month. I know a turbo car requires lots of time and of course money and tuning. I know i got a lot of researching to do but this is a start. thanks again.

"Michael"
I would defiantly like some help, especially from someone with a really nice set up. if you don’t mind me asking how much have you spent and what have you changed on your motor/tranny/etc.... I mean going turbo wise upgrades and add ons.

i would keep the engine you have right now but if your mind is already set on doing a swap, do this before you go turbo. Also there have been some known problems with 99+ swaps... http://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/1.8_conversion.php (second paragraph)

Since you already have a 1.8 motor, the best thing you could do swap wise would be to put on a 99/00 head...it flows better and is 'said' to give 10 rwhp on a stock car.

The electrical side is a bitch from what I have gathered. Just lots of extra work for no real benefit.

because aside from the turbo and valve cover the MSM motor is the same as the ealier (non VVT) NB 1.8s. Added cost with no benefits.

I have spent way to much to say. But this did include me buying 2 or 3 different engine management systems, 3 turbos, a couple of different exhaust setups, etc. The engine management was were the cost really hit (went with FM's Link ECU) because the two piggybacks I had bought wouldn't do the job like I had wanted it to. I have a T3/T04e 50 trim with a log manifold with an Tial 38mm external wastegate and 2.5" exhaust. I am using an Intercooler, with 550cc RC injectors. I didn't skimp on anything so my kit cost a great deal, and I probably could have bought it from FM for the same price, but I feel that my kit is better designed and certainly better looking than theres, which is what I was after. If you are interested in more detail, shoot me a PM or email me at AuroraMotorsports@gmail.com.

Default Turbo help

Xvolcomx19 , I am in the same boat as you just picked up a 97m edition BRG from e-bay and drove it back 800 miles, trouble free except for a trooper in Richmond VA got me 72mph in a 50mph work zone.(he let me go woo-hoo) Anyway I need a turbo also maybe we could share the info we collect. I am planning on doing this as soon as possible. So anyone with any input, places to purchase people to talk to would be much appreciated. One question I had for you guys, I plan on autocrossing also, wouldnt a supercharger be better for that application? (I want a turbo tho)
Thanks guys.

what's up "needynoob"? Im glad we are on the same boat,im sure we where all on this boat at one point in are lifes. In my personal opinion a s/c would be better as far as throttle responce but its just something about turbo that gives you this feeling of woooooo lol, well thats my opinion of course.
I think going turbo just gives you a endless option as far as power, with s/c you can only go so far.but like i said thats just my opinion.

Some of the latest SC's have had some inpressive numbers, but I know from experience that SC's aren't nearly as neat as SC's at least on our cars.

I had a JRSC with upgraded pulley, yada yada.. made 165whp, didn't feel fast, just felt like a normal car. It was cheap and easy to install and that was about it.
