Is my new turbo too big?

I used to have a really small Garrett t25 from a 300zx on my 1.8 motor. Decided I wanted more top end, and since I am an OBX dealer, that I would test their turbo's to see if I could sell them. Well of course, being OBX, they're hard to deal with (I don't think they speak english), and there are no specs for their turbo's. Anyways, I ordered the GT28R with t25 housing, and just got it today.... And I'm not sure if it's just because my turbo was so small before, but this thing is freaking massive. The turbine side is 64, and the compressor side is .70 AR... it's a ball bearing turbo... when the hell is this thing going to spool?

What are the sizes of the compressor and turbine?

And out of curiosity what did it cost?

I found your problem. Measure the wheels.

levnubhin 01-22-2010 03:05 PM

take it apart, measure everything, post measurements.

internal wastegate fail.

gospeed81 01-22-2010 03:13 PM

1. I don't believe in "too big"

2. How didn't I know you were an OBX dealer? Got any of the Honda B18 Skunk2 intake manifold knock-offs?

3. You can get an idea by the measurements...but actual compressor efficiency will play a big role. Since they obviously don't test them (or provide compressor flow maps), you're stuck doing real world application-based testing.

In for datalogs of 2000-4000rpm spool in 4th.

Braineack 01-22-2010 03:15 PM

its just a big housing...I like that compressor housing. It's also really easy to unbolt and measure that compressor wheel dawg.

y8s 01-22-2010 03:16 PM

it will spool by 4000.

http://gallery.y8s.com/d/455-3/gt25_86ar_08.jpg

similar to this maybe?

Stein 01-22-2010 03:22 PM

It's an OBX R so that should be good for lowering spool by 500RPM.:giggle:

Heck, you have it, might as well slap it on and give it a go. Then we will KNOW when it will spool.

miatamike 01-22-2010 03:25 PM

I have a GT28R as well. I hit full boost at 3500 RPM (2.0l Stroker)

I'm not picking on you but actually want to know more about your car/motor. Go post a noob thread in the Meet and Greet section with some specs and photos of your car.

round hurr we call that a gt2560. Hi mike!!!

Braineack 01-22-2010 03:39 PM

I'm pretty sure it's just a big housing on a small 60mm compressor wheel.

DragonsMaw 01-22-2010 03:39 PM

You're an OBX dealer? I think you're giving me reason to go to the island if/when I have money.

Hey Hey Trey Trey ;-)

dustinb 01-22-2010 04:38 PM

OK OK I'll take it off apart and measure it :) I can't slap it on the car as I'm waiting for my new flyin miata DIY manifold / downpipe to arrive (they're 2-3 weeks backordered).

Full_Tilt_Boogie 01-22-2010 04:43 PM

this looks like the turbo on their site, and liek you said no specs, lol

Product Name - OBX Racing Sports

Yup that's it :) I have a 2006 turbo product catalogue from them with full specs, but they've changed everything since.

It cost $550, and at this point I'm quite impressed by it... it's even water cooled, which I really wasn't expecting.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 01-22-2010 04:48 PM

for 150 bucks less you can get a godspeed "gt2876"

GT2876R T28 TURBO CHARGER ( no wastegate) - $450.00 : GodSpeed Project, The Art of Performance

and it has specs, lol

psiturbo 01-22-2010 05:27 PM

Internal wastegate fail +3!

Just put a motorcycle cylinder head, put a micro Windows chip and make it rev to where it says Made in Chinatown.

Ebay chinachargers T3/T4s are still a win win situation on a 1.8 block...

check the wheel when you unbolt it. A lot of cheap ebay turbos cut off material off the side (the flat part that rests against the back in this pic) to balance the wheels which causes them to fail quickly sometimes even at low boost. Good turbocharger manufacturers such as Garrett cut off material from the end like this pic. They can do that because their wheels are not much off balance while cheap manufacturers need to remove a lot of material to balance their wheels. Last month I read an article that explained and showed bunch of pics but i cannot find the damn link :(

Attachment 201021
On the image above the wheel strength is not compromised as in this one thats the usual ebay special that usually tends to explode under boost..

and holy crap heres an ebay turbo for you.

dustinb 01-22-2010 06:07 PM

Well here's the dimensions
Compressor: 2 3/4" (I thought it was 3" when I took the pic, so could be deceiving in image)

http://www.dbmiata.com/miata/turbo/DSC00229.JPG
Turbine: 2"

Nono - get a set of calipers and take accurate measurements (within .01") of the inducer and exducer of each wheel. We can't tell you much about that turbo using tape measure measurements.

You're kidding, right?

Although that is more accurate than the distributor's information.

gospeed81 01-22-2010 06:21 PM

Coool! I've been looking for a 3"/2" trim.

psiturbo 01-22-2010 06:23 PM

Whatever!

Know tons of people with chinachargers running super strong back in Puerto Rico, there is a forum (but cannot find it right now) that has a complete section of only chinacharger Hondas running them, some even go to the race track. Anyway, I do not want to hijack as that is a topic for another thread.

Braineack 01-22-2010 06:23 PM

measure the inducer AND exducer dawg.

best I can judge it's a "2871" 48 trim wheel.

FWIW: I'm running a $150 ebay turbo.

triple88a 01-22-2010 06:39 PM

hey nothing wrong with ebay turbos if you are willing to take the risk.

levnubhin 01-22-2010 07:14 PM

Ebay turbo here, been running it for almost 10 months between 16 and 24 psi.

it looks like thoose knock off gt2876r turbos on ebay. I am interested to see how well it works though. OBX is half the price of a garrett

Stop hating on internal wastegate, it has feelings too.

And it won't be operational for 2-3 weeks, but once it is, I'll post full data logs.
