my turbo sucks!
Actually it's the sound i'm annoyed by :giggle:
It's such a loud sucking hiss .. it's as loud or louder than my bypass valve which is currently venting to atmospherre... I put whatever damplifier pro i had left on my hood, (a little over a square foot) but that didn't make ANY difference at all. Would making a heat shield / cold air box reduce the noise? Could i soundproof that?? I used to enjoy just driving around in the miata.. Then i wanted a little more power b/c it was embarassing. Now, i've got enough power, but i feel like a boy racer.. my exhaust is too loud, i have a whooshing BOV, and my intake sounds like a deflating tire! :vash: |
Trade the turbo kit in for a Camry?
|
recirculate your BOV to quiet it down, make sure you don't have a boost leak, get a K&N filter (cheap ones will make more noise than others), and add another muffler to your exhaust, problem solved.
|
Grow a pair of balls.
|
Sam, fuck you -- your 1.6L valve cover is still waiting for you ;-) Given enough time i may get bored and start polishing it to see how bad i can screw it up.
I have a begi-s, it hink it came w/a K&N... i will also get a new exhaust at some point, hopefully a 3".. I will be checking for a boost leak once i get my new intake tract.. Thanks guys -Tomaj |

My cold air box reduces the volume of the sucking noise significantly.

Hey,
I'm using this exhaust: Got a deal on an exhaust! - MX-5 Miata Forum Before the turbo, this exhaust was ridiculously loud to the point i was going to toss it, having bought it just a few months earlier! And i found this thread while looking :), seems i'm not the only one who likes quiet! Stock muffler with turbo - MX-5 Miata Forum I'll be looking into the cold-air box... Braineack -- did you build it yourself? if so, out of what? (aluminum, thickness, how much material, how did you join @ the bends - welding?) -Tomaj |
Mine was way too loud also, and I got harassed for asking how to quiet it down. At the moment I have a hot-air intake that isn't too loud but I plan to try turning it into a quieter cold air intake.
|
i bought some silicone tubing to make a new (straighter) intake... once that's done, it's time to make the cold air box, i'll probably do something similar to this:
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t35127/ |
if its too loud take it off and ship it over to me. I won't cry about it.
 Saw a thread on m.net about this once.. Retarded.. http://jugrnot.com/IntakeMuffler1 (Large).jpg |
i build "version 1" of my cold air box. it's rude & crude but works, it's definitely a little quieter now. i stuck some leftover damplifier on it ;-)
I bought 2x2 ft aluminum sheet, and cut it in half. I then cut, fit, repeat until it was more or less OK for the bottom end. i then cut the top end by eyeballing the line from the side and marking with a pen.. not ideal, but OK for a rough draft. for the intake hole, i just cut a "U" out as opposed to making an actual round hole (version 2 will have that). I notched all along the edges and folded the metal back to make a smoother edge, then pushed some fuel line onto the edges to create a softer edge. right now it's not perma-mounted with any tabs or whatever, but seems fairly stable because the cutout for the intake is tight enough to hold it tight. Here's a quick question -- i was planning on using some 'hot water pipe' insulation for the edging instead of the fuel line... do you think this foam tube will be able to withstand underhood temps? -tomaj |

^^ Yeah that is a Mega-fail. If I was FM, I would sue for having my name within 10 feet of that car.
If you enclose the filter and/or add some ducting (smooth wall) it will help lower the sound level. Something like a BEGI-style air box would make a difference. |
your car turbo to loud...
http://www.dontgomovement.com/missing.jpg i have a mp62 and it's annoying when it's not screaming at other cars. |

So since we all drive girlie cars, we must make them loud and obnoxious to compensate, show everyone how manly we are. got it.
In the meantime -- I built my 2nd version of the box.. i used the hot water foam around the top to seal against the hood, and the fuel line along the sides and bottom. I'll probably build version 3 in a few months once all the cuts on my hands healed :-D |

vroom vroom Leave it to the Engrish! :bowrofl: |
OK so i'm back on this :)
I bought some "luxury liner" and heat shielding from second skin. the luxury liner is a sound absorbing foam and i had to get 9 sq ft at the minimum so i figure i'll lay some down in the trunk and near the firewall area under hte carpeting. I'll post back in a week or so once i'm all done! |
Wow
|
I get bonners from turbo spooling sound
|
I received the stuff from second skin and applied it to my makeshift cold air box.
I only drove aroud w/the top up for 2 minutes because its super cold right now but so far it didn't seem to make a damn bit of difference :) FWIW i put the heat shield on the outside of the box and the luxury liner (closed cell foam) on the inside. The top of the box is not closed, which is where i think a lot of the noise is coming from. -Tomaj |
UPDATE
I drove the car to work today and had an opportunity to take a better listen under different load conditions. The sound deadening definitely made a difference! Under heavy acceleration the noise is definitely muffled and i'm finally able to hear the exhaust vs just the intake noise. I'm hoping once I fully enclose the intake (cover the top of the box w/aluminum & deadener) i think it will lower the sound further. -tomaj |
The day I'm annoyed by the sound of my turbo spooling is the day I'll consider myself an old fart getting ready to die
|
lol i guess this thread has a limited audience
|
my car is loud as fuck.............quiet cars are for pansies! :giggle:

I'm so going stealth BOV and sound deadening for the compressor. New ARTech exhaust should sound nice, and that's all she needs to hear unless I'm really on it. Mine makes way to much compressor/bov noise. It sounds like a pissed off air compressor during regular driving. I want it to be civil most of the time, and then open up when I'm driving hard. |

Unfortunately limited by crappy IHI flanged manifold. God I hate that thing. If Abe gets back to me expect to see this crap coming soon to a FS ad near you. |
final update, i promise.
I bought a leftover 'prototype' cold air box from begi for a great price. It took some modification to fit, but it's worth it. I added a couple of mounting plates with 3" hose connectors on them to either side of the cold air box. this allowed me to seal the box, mounting the air filter inside the box to one plate, and the intake hose on the other side to to the other plate. I also cut out a small section of the box so that my NACA duct feeds directly into the box, and sealed around that cutout with closed cell weather stripping foam. Finally, i glued a couple of pieces of the luxury liner inside the cold air box, and glued the heat shield material to the outside of the box. RESULT -- my intake is much quieter!! In the past, full throttle after 3500 rpm became an annoyingly noisy affair. Now it's barely audible at 3500, and even at full throttle it's only a pleasant reminder of the turbo's presence. -Tomaj |
Turn your hearing aid down! I run a 3" straight pipe on my car along with a vent through the hood right over the turbo, it's nowhere near embarrassing.
|
Drive a Honda Civic with a fart can and without resonator for a week, THAT is loud.
